Title: grill replacement
Post by: nathan on 24 November 2018, 09:26 AM
got invited to a car show with the 6.9 tomorrow so gave it a good detailing and clay barring etc.  finally thought id pop on a few bits purchase years ago ive never fit.this included the plastic grill with all new chrome strips. not sure if these are NLA now as  there 123 ones are NLA!  there are 6 horizontal chrome strips which require 3 grommets each.  the vertical chrome strip is much more expensive and has a different shape of grommets (3 for the vertical).  anyway, was an opportune time to polish all the grill interior and the rest.  I even removed my 20 dollar blue badge and cleaned under it. sorry rubbish pics but sun down by then, the new grill is nice and grey now, rather than light grey!

An oft-overlooked part of our cars, done perfectly! I think the plastic grille mesh may be available aftermarket now, and think the trim strips can be had through ÜRO. It's best to have genuine Mercedes parts, though!

I've purchased MB and uro horizontal trim strip and cannot tell them apart. The vertical one current MB and is different than vintage ones. The older have a centerline Ridge and the new are rounded. The vertical one is brutally expensive.

The MB shell is very reasonably priced.

Nice work Nathan, I did mine 2 years ago and its still looking mint. Genuine everything is best and I got the chrome and clips from Pelican as genuine and they fitted well. It makes a massive difference to the face of the W116  ;D

About 2 years ago I accidentally bought an aftermarket grill, while promised a genuine grill. Got my money back from eBay, for it was truly an inferior product. Wrong color, wrong material and lots of leftover , squeezed pieces of plastic where the 2 mold pieces came together. I would check it out real carefully before buying one.

Are these horizontal bits available separately? One of mine is missing a small piece of it and it drives me crazy.

You will want to find one like this made by URO, near identical to MB.

or for a bit more.

I haven't bought the strips in a while but the horizontals were about 20 dollars, and the vertical was 90 dollars. remember 3 clips per strip need to be bought.  I dont imagine aftermarket ones of these are too bad in quality?
