Green pitting in chrome

I've been cleaning up a bumper piece. After lots of washing and polishing (Autosol metal polish) I still have the green corrosion like flecks in the chrome. Any recommendations on how to eliminate the unsightly flecks without re-chroming?

Seems like the copper layer underneath the chrome is oxidizing. I'm not sure if something permanent can be done against it.

Unfortunately that's something only re-chroming will fix. As Max mentioned this is corrosion of the base copper layer underneath the chrome and nickel plating.
The only positive thing about it is that the copper patina slows down further corrosion.

Not directly related but for getting all the fine dirt off I use a ball of crunched up kitchen aluminium. I just gently rub the fine dirt off

Thanks for the info and the tips. This was a spare piece that's been buried in the corner of the garage. Was hoping to salvage it but, though usable, ultimately it's not as good as what's currently on the car. Incidentally, buying new chrome pieces from MB is expensive but when they come they are definitely an item of beauty that makes the owner proud of their 116.
