For those who wondered what RWL tyres on Bundts on a 6.9 looks like..

Hi Gents,
This is a dilemma, I was about to purchase some tyres to fit a set of AMG 16in alloys for my Gold 6.9
but as  Bill has stated his 225/55R16 tyres have the same rolling circumference as original 215/70R14
6.9 standard equipment.  But they rub!
Then on the other hand 13B has "big mother" 245/60R14 rubber on his car and it seems to be OK.
Which way should I go?
#1  original wheels with 245/60R14 Tyres or
#2  16" Alloys wheels with 225/55R16 Tyres
both should be close to same rolling circumference??
Regards Robert

Robert, check this link that CarlJones posted not long ago.  Indeed they're very close. The 16"ers were bigger but with only 4mm difference in diameter when I typed in those measurements. 215/70/14's are 3mm bigger again.

Robert,

The offset of the rims will also affect the tendency to rub or not.

Hi Ryan,
The 16" AMG wheels I have are off a 107 Roadster and have identical offset to standard  6.5"bundts, so as long as I keep the overall diameter the same or slightly less than a 215/70x14 there should not be any problems? I think?

in holland in the late 70's and begin 80's the RWL tyres on 14 and 15inch wolfrace wheels and chrome fender trims were verry populair on the W116 i've seen than verry much in those days  , it is a long time in my mind to buy those wolfrace's for my W116

and 215/70/14 should be no problem , back in the late 80's i had 16 inch riall wheels on my W116 it had 225 in the front and 235 in the back that was no problem  :)

Fit, perhaps (the bolt pattern is the same), but what about:

* the offset
* the raise edges of the bolt/lug holes?

I know a number of Aussies who've fitted Ford (Fraud) 14" steel wheels to older Benzes (W108s etc.) - just because they are being cheapskates - and superficially they do appear to fit "well enough", but I'd be particularly concerned about the missing lip on those bolt holes; the Fraud wheels are flat around those holes because they are made for nuts-on-studs style of fitting, not for M-B bolt style.

i remember some wolfrace wheels had oval bolt holes and much people put ford wolfrace on their W116 but iff they fitted perfect i dont know ? , much people had those wheels on their W116 over here in holland in the past , and now days you dont see any W116 with wolfrace on it annymore maybe becouse it dont fit perfect i dont really know ? i had in the past a 69' mercury cougar xr7 and on that car i had rial wheels that came of a W116 of mine

Thanks so much for posting this. I am just struggling to find some nice fat rubber to put on my '75. This has sealed the deal. Those things look just awesome. Thanks again!

Wow this sure is a post from the past... :-)

In the 9 years since this post I've made the following observations:

Make sure you use W116/126 bundts which are 6.5in wide, stay away from W123 bundts which look the same but are only 6in wide

In the end I think 245 was just a bit too wide... for 99% of driving this is not a problem but where was some combination of steering angle and suspension travel which made them rub (?) somewhere (?) which I could feel but not hear and never deduced 100% where it was coming from because it was so rare.

If I were to do this again I would go for 235/60/14.

When this set wore out I changed them to the same BFG Radial T/A this time in 215/70-14 in line with what the 6.9 was originally sold with.  I still put the RWL on the outside however as with all T/As I have the option to turn them around with the black side facing out, since these tyres are non-directional.
