Flat door panels vs thick moulded panels

My 74 280SE has no headrests!

around 75/76 the 280's also got the thick panels

As options, I believe, because my '77 280SE has the thin panels.

Greg, your 280SE has no headrests?  I can't say I've ever seen a 116 without headrests (I'm assuming you're talking about the front seats here).  A 108, sure, but not a 116.  Most interesting.

It was normal for early South African 116's not to have headrests in front.  It seems to be only from 76 or 77 onwards they were fitted.

I have the thick panels but on the air venting I discovered that part is thicker at the bottom than the top. I could not work out why the storage bins were always full of what looked like tea leaves. I inspected and found that there is a fine foam coating the inside of the panels and this has perished, fallen off and now makes a bulge at the base of the door panel. Must vacuum it out one day!

Very interesting, Greg.  I've been on the forum long enough now that I noticed the lack of headrests as strange before I picked up on it being RHD!  BTW, what paint code is yours?  I'm considering re-painting my 280SE (since I really don't like white) and that blue is stunning.

It is DB 920 - Tiefblau - "Deep Blue" or Admiral Blue. It is a "solid" colour so there is no clear coat. It looks really good when the car is clean and the paint has been polished!

But, re  280se with thin doors.  Found one tonight on Oz ebay.  We're giving our 116's away.  I want this one.

Theres a few 116's on ebay at the moment....watching most of them...hopping one of them at the least will be mine....theres a good one in Kingaroy at the moment thats ex SA...

That one has MB-tex seats!! Rare for us as we never got MB-Tex here.
