anyone know the PN for the open cell foam that is stuffed into the C piller side vents?

Looks like the stuff that is used in aquarium water filters

is it suppose to fill the entire cavity from top to bottom? All I ever have seen is crumbling shrunken that disintegrates as soon as you touch it,

What would the purpose be of this foam?  Seeing as air exits here to my knowledge, I do not see how this could have a filtering function?  Perhaps more like a screen to keep bugs and debris out?  But then again I have been known to be wrong about things ::)

I suspect it's to prevent debris entering the vents but it's usually turned to dust by now.

I think this discussion came up a few years back, and it was found that there was no part number for the screen/foam filter.  None of the original books show it anywhere, either.  I also believe that not all W116 cars received this filter.  Something about only the early or the late cars getting it.....I just don't remember.  However, I'll bet there is something somewhere in parts books and EPC that would work.
