Fanfare horns

So I noticed the horn switch on my center console and then realized that that is for the Fanfare horns.  A few weeks ago I think I made and error and pulled out the goofy looking air horns under the battery tray and threw them away.  The whole thing looked like a kluge anyway.

Reading what I can, it seems I may not of fubared entirely as it looks like the real horns are these.

There still a a mess of wires and 2 relays near the old horn position.

Doe anyone have a simple wiring diagram for the bosh ones? and where should they be located?

Here's a scan of my wiring diagram for a euro-spec 450SE, and in German:

The standard horns go underneath the front fenders.
Will you be using the fanfare switch? :)

Ok, I have these in the mail.
Naturally, I have no clue, except that I must have 12V horns, and these are gorgeous 12V horns.

My mechanic can wire them into the regular system, so that's OK.
I will remove the OEM claxon.

Besides that, would I need other stuff to run these?

Yes, that is what the fanfare horns look like for a W116.  It seems to have been quite a common option on the 6.9's, not sure if it was available on other models.

I cant help much with location, as my one 6.9 does not have the option, and the other one was converted in the 70's to run FIAMM air horns. (L-O-U-D)

Those are applicable to late W111, W108 and W109, so you may need to look at those relevant wiring diagrams to get information on their installation.

I already found a thread on the wiring, but do I need relays or other gadgets for these?

Unless I miss my guess, you'll need the fanfare button, plus an additional relay. The horn button is a neutral ground switch. The horn relay (if there is one) has 12v+ battery running through the switch of the relay. When you press the horn button, you ground the coil, which energizes the relay and makes the connection from the battery to the horn.

To add "country" horns, you'll need a second relay. This one needs to be a single-pole, double throw. The 12v+ line leaving the horn relay would pass to the center of the switched legs of the relay. The output leg of the relay that is connected to the center leg when the relay is not energized would travel to the factory klaxon. The output of the relay that is connected to the center leg when the relay is energized would travel to the fanfare horns.

The fanfare switch would provide ignition-switched 12v+ to the coil of the 2nd relay, with the other side of the coil attached to ground (earth). Don't wire it using 12v+ from the battery, else the relay will stay energized constantly as long as the fanfare switch is closed - this will run a battery down over time.

Well the parts car has yielded up a pair of fanfare horns that had been substituted for the regular horns.  :)

Here is the wiring diagram for fanfare horns from the W126 electrical manual.  Not sure if the wiring would be the same for W116.
