Completely different result had it been doing 88mph with optional flux capacitor.  ;D

Now, I made a discovery... This 280 doesn't have central locking... absolutely no sign of it ever being there.

Clearly, it was optional.

No vac reservoir in the boot either and vac tube tree into firewall?  Weird.  I thought they all had it standard.  Good point on the fuel cap MT

Good point, I'll go and have a look at the fuel filler area now.

Done; There is an original blanking grommet in the fuel filler area, no holes where the element would have been mounted, no vacuum lines anywhere in the car, and no reservoir!

No central locking was quite common on the South African spec cars, especially the earlier ones.

I want to delete the central locking on my 200D :)

There was a non-USA spec W116 at the Pick-N-Pull once. It had no central locking, either. It also had the horizontal defroster strips in the back. And, it had poverty door cards with window cranks, which I had never seen before. The seats were heat-pressed like the W123s have. At first I thought someone had fitted a W123 interior into it. I ended up buying the door panels for nearly $100 only to end up nearly giving them away a few months later.

Probably not MT, they weren't all that common back then. Some vehicles had non-locking caps visible from the exterior.

Well, both the interior and exterior are mostly stripped. I can now see most of the extent of rust, and it will be an epic task to get this under control... But is is achievable. 8)

I do need;

  • A pair of front fenders
  • Complete front bumper mount crossmember(to be spot welded in)... Yes, the front frame section!
  • Front air dam
  • Driver's door (RHS)
  • Possible need for beaver panel sections
  • RHS 1/4 panel needs extensive reconstruction
  • C-pillar base needs a bit of work
  • Floor pan/firewall work needed
  • Sill ends need attention
  • Complete interior and sunroof frame replacement
  • Mechanical repairs/rebuilds

Well yes, there is a bit of work there of course.

I started her up this afternoon... CSV has an electrical problem, so I had to have an assistant push the AFM flap down for me. The engine sounds nice, but needs some oil leaks and a thermo housing coolant leak sorted.

Damn... what a project.

How much did the car cost?  Add up all that change you found on the strip down, and minus it from the total paid price.  Love finding that ish on pulling a part a dunga.

So....... manual tranny hooked up to a nice rust free 116 with a good m110.. Add some woosh and you'll be sweet. :)

Quite a bit of fun indeed. 8)

It was $150+$200 to keep it registered.

Minus $10 I found on the floor. :)

Thanks for the link, S Class.

Here's the latest happenings. I removed the sunroof frame, which also required rear window removal. The sunroof frame is a heap of junk, but the roof is OK.
