Nothing a bead blast n polish couldn't fix!!!  Followed by a fresh clear coat....  Or you could paint it (or anodize), any colour you like!

An impressive looking alternator is hard to manage.

I just used a Scotch Brite on a few of mine after degreasing to get slightly rough, but bright finish.

I've not seen a clear coat on them though, could it have been some sort of wax, S Class? I assume this is the pressed steel variety? 8)

I sandblasted everything, which cleared all the stains, and then finished off with steel wool and a high temp clear acrylic. Don't know whether the finish will burn off. Hope not but at least they can be handled without getting oily fingerprints and if it does well that's a job for the future. Had the rocker covers polished which came up like chrome and hope to keep them like that by hand polishing.

TJ, I'm not sure what the coating is, but it doesn't feel waxy to the touch.

Alternator housing back from bead blasting and all hardware back from plating, also had the WUR cleaned up.

Last night I finished detaling some more ofthe engine, cleaned the water pump,pulleys,etc... tomorrow the V  gets painted and the box from the Classic Center arrives so assembly can begin.

I have a brand new vacuum box for the distributor so will replace that as well.

Tks,

Joe

Painted the V this evening, pictures tomorrow... here is the engine fully masked ready for Hi-Temp flat black

All hardware has been sorted and with the invaluable help of pictures taken during disassembly, every nut, bolt and washer has been trial fitted to their appropriate location, looking very nice indeed, hehehe...

Parts have arrived from the Classic Center so over the weekend I should make some pretty good progress.

Tks,

Joe

Got a lot done today, joined manifold's upper and lower parts, installed complete "table" on the engine. Getting the vacuum connector for the transmission / vacuum port was a nightmare, little seal washers fell into the V 3 times! Had to take the whole thing out to retrieve the little bugger....

Upper water pump neck installed with new hoses

Anyway, here are the pictures so far, hope to have the car running by tomorrow afternoon.

Excellent,

That's really looking good!

BTW, if you're concerned about it looking a little too "tizzed" up, it will develop a patina after a while and with the engine bay looking like it does, it will look the part without being too "in yer face".

Nathan would probably concur regarding the Gs through the mud, haha. I did a similar thing with my 280S... After I did all the work I ended up diving the car through clay mud and it even ended up in the engine bay! The whole point of that car is to use it though, and that I do!

Hehehe...

Good idea Jason, then  I will have the car  shipped to you and you can re-do the work, hehehe....

Tim, that's the plan, once things get hot and we loose some of the new plating effect, it will have the right "look"

I still plan to use the car often, which will include some trips to my girlfriend's home town (about 1000km round trip) as well as some daily driving.

Tks

Wow.... what a day....

Injectors installed as well as the mixture controller and fuel distributor. Replaced all vacuum lines and connectors. Unfortunately the original color tubing is NLA, all MB supplies now is a generic white. Alternator and distributor installed, vacuum box replaced.

Power steering pump was looking a little tired so why not give it a little coat of hi-temp flat black...

Time to go to bed... almost 2AM here...

Here are the pictures of the day:
