Hi Mark

Mine were the same, both sides. Surprisingly and somewhat luckily it was the only areas of rust on those doors! Must be a design flaw... John Haynes did reinstall my quarter lights with new rubber seals, so hopefully it'll last for another 38 years.

That actually doesn't look half as bad. The extreme case of it spreads down that inner edge onto the door panel. My 350SE had critical rust in there, a gaping hole really, while the 450SE fared much better.
The funny thing about it? The W124 estate has the exact same problem, albeit further down the body. Every single one of them rots at the D-pillar bottom corner, and in the exact same way.

"Signature" MB design flaw? :D

Quote from: rumb on 01 February 2018, 11:51 AMyou only have to cut the motor hole for certain years/models?  All of mine just had 2 bolts and one nut holding the motor/crank in and both came out fine after removing the glass and support rails.

According to the first workshop manual (1973), you have to remove the glass and support rails to take off crank with motor. Newer manuals recomend to drill three holes in order to remove the screws that hold motor on crank. Finally you can remove crank without taking off glass and rails :

From aproximately september 1979, the three holes were factory made.

Must've been earlier than that - my 1977 350SE had those from factory too.

I have some 1978 and 1979 cars which don't have the factory holes. My latest 280SE (september 1979) is the only one I've ever seen with factory holes. Maybe the doors of your 350SE had been replaced.

The whole car was 100% as it left the factory. Well, minus the 50% of rust it consisted of.

The holes are on the top of the outside panel on the back edge just below the fixed window. Just seemed an odd place to rot particularly as it seems outside in. There doesn't seem to be any on the inside.

Back to the original topic and yes the manual is right you can push the trim off with a plastic wedge as long as you can keep it on the edge and not let it slip underneath as it will then deform it which doesn't look good. Surprised that doing it the manual way was so much easier than my original nervous attempt well I continue to live and learn.

Any one point me in the direction of getting the caged nuts that fit on inside door to secure the handles. one broke free when I was trying to remove it.

I have never seen rust that bad on this area of a door.  What did someone do?  Submerge the car in a bath of salt water?  That's horrible!
