Title: Deleted sunroof and fixed headlining (on a budget)
Post by: pal on 17 May 2020, 01:53 AM
Dear w116ers, when our 6.9 sunroof was deleted a few years back it was done badly and as a result the normal headlining didn't work.
I thought it might be useful to share what we did (in lockdown) to get the headlining back.

1) Removed front seats and centre console (over the gearbox), removed all side and front roof panels, removed front left door pin
2) Used a large piece of card (the one the plywood came in) to measure - from memory it was 42" by 5'
3) Cut the same shape into 5.5mm weather resistant ply
4) Spray glued 2 layers of foam and a single layer of white perforated vinly headliner (ironed) onto the sheet
5) Prepared the underside of the roof, removed old sponge/sound deadening and repainted then applied foam to prevent vibration
6) Fed the sheet in via the front left door, rotated to fit and wedged in to the back panel
7) Using large washers and appropriate screws tightened the side of the panel (you may need 1" spacing to bring it down to meet the side panels or you can rest it on the panels without) the extra layer of foam helps to follow the line of the side panel.
8) Re attached all panels.

Total cost was about £100 (including the glue, wood, foam and headliner)
Total time taken was about 6 hours (because we had a fair bit of trial and error and thought about cutting the board)

Stay safe all!

That's a nice job Pal. I did my own headlining back in 2011 or so. Main part still looks good but the section for the sunroof has got slightly damaged by the sliding in and out. It certainly takes patience.

Thanks Adam, I hope you are staying safe. I'm doing Noico and foam insulation on the floor today.
Cheers!
