I bought a 3-in 1 gauge, the left unit in the dash, just to have Thomas point out to me that it isn't a w116 clock. Indeed, it is a R107 number, but should that matter?
So, I did a lot of digging, and came up with this oversight above, following the various models and parts fiches.
I seem to have bought the 0045400347 for 560SL, and apparently, there was only ever a USA 560SL.
It might also be a 380SL clock, and both the 380 EU and 380 USA versions have the same dash, the same left gauge.

Key point, I guess is the  0025405247
Google tells me this is the earliest R107 gauge.. whatever that means.
Point is, 380sl USA / 560SL JP/Australia   are RHD and LHD, and apparently share the same dash.
In that light, would the 560SL USA really have it's own, special gauge?

Can anyone tell whether the 560SL had a different dash from all the other R107's?
As much as I dig and compare, it seems to make no sense that this would be a special part, other than just a replacement number for what is otherwise the same clock as all the other R107's -I think.
I also don't see how that 3-in1 left gauge has any functions that might be depending on the engine size.
Can anyone chip in here, especially if you have good news for me?
I can't believe that this third(!) NOS gauge purchase is also doomed..

This is what I bought:

I won't be much help of figuring out the confusion (away from EPC at the moment).
However, I'd say electrically the gauge should be the same on all these models and might just work. Even the economy gauge, as all it does is indicate intake vacuum, which could be done with "minimal effort".

The Economy gauge should be the first clue that those instruments are from a later car (aka 80s 107s), as I've never seen them on 116s.

Regret to say that this confirms the "idiot" part that I played in this. The "economy" gauge.
How on earth.. what was I thinking?

It would not win any prizes..but shape-wise and other function-wise.. would the other three functions not be a matter of plug 'n play?
You think anyone is gonna notice that little 4th gauge? In the end, I missed it as well, haha!

Hello Stan,

at least your "economic"-gauge does have the dice at the backside that hums when you forget to shut down the lights when leaving the car.
Only late w116 also do have this, so check if your car has it (or upgrade your car).
If you like and have time I can put it into a w116 instrument cluster to check if it mechanically fits.
Sorry- really no time to put it into my W116 to check if it works there.

Regards,
Thomas

Are you sure about that? late w116 had an economy meter? That would be great news.

Not what you were asking about but that is also the later electronic speedometer and not directly compatible with any stock W116 drivetrain, I need one for my car though haha.

Hello Stan,
no - late W116 had that dice-buzzer. No economic-gauge.

So..Dare I ask.. Is there an (easy) way to get that economy gauge to work in a W116?
I bet that's the first time anyone here has stumbled upon this issue, haha!
I REALLY do not want to buy a 4th unit, having lost 3 previous NOS clocks.
However, staring at a dead economy meter every time I look at the dash would be really unbearable.

My roommate has a W126 diesel which didn't originally have an economy gauge, but someone fitted one and used it as a gauge to tell how full the waste vegetable oil tank was, so he essentially had two fuel gauges.

.   Simply run a line to a source of direct manifold vacuum. JMSr.
