Title: Coco Mats - what do you think?
Post by: daantjie on 04 April 2018, 10:31 AM
Hi guys

I have toyed with the idea of Coco Mats for a while.  I looked into it again and I must admit I am not too impressed by the fact that they do not have the correct driver's mat, in that their mat does not have the flap to cover the driver side footrest.  I am not sure if this is "to spec", but I for one like to have the footrest covered by the carpet as well.

Any other folks bought a set off them?

Cheers

I don't think any mats cover the deadpedal.

These are 116 Cocos. I think it is the best you'll ever get.

I bought some "OEM" ones off ebay a few years ago and it has this flap on the driver side. It has the Benz star and "Mercedes-Benz" on the heel pad. I'll snap a pic when I get a chance. I like the foot rest cover personally but I guess I'm in the minority.

Try to find a part number on those.

Not sure if these are "official" Benz ones but I think dealers used to sell these and now they are selling off old stock perhaps.  Anyhow there are quite a few listings on ebay for these, just enter "W116 floor mat" and these will pop up, here is a used set, in blue, which shows the flap:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1974-1980-Mercedes-Benz-W116-LWB-BLUE-floor-mats-280SEL-350SEL-450SEL-450-SEL/183134107484?hash=item2aa3a4b75c:g:YJEAAOSwx5larqDz&vxp=mtr

Quality of the foam backing is shite but I just ripped it off to stop it from crumbling onto the floor.  Fit is great and colour is a nice match.  Not Coco Mat of course but for a driver more than sufficient IMHO.

Since I've never heard of those before - is there anything particularly special about the Coco Mats?

Maybe cocomats are a North America thing, but they are the quintessential aftermarket  floor mat used in the 60's -70's on many European cars.  They are a coarse weave from coconut fiber usually 2 tone and are very durable. Still made in the USA.  https://www.cocomats.com

"Cocomats were first developed for cars in the 1950's; Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and other European manufacturers used cocomats as a standard car mats in their automobiles."  They may have been dealer supplied?

Wow... their shipping charges are outrageous - 75USD for first item, 43USD for each additional one. That's over 460USD for a set of four RHD olive Sisal mats with shipping to Ireland. Then there's import duties, and 23% VAT on top all that. Poor value for money, as that's about as much as a custom made full carpet set, with four mats, for the entire chassis, except trunk, costs at cabrio.de, shipping included :O

Hey Daniel

I like em!

I have a set in one of my w108s and they are a very nice fit.  I have been toying with the idea of getting a set for a newly acquired w123 coupe.  After seeing the picture you posted you have motivated me and I am going to order a a set...

That s a retarded quote. Not only are there more then 1 supplier for these, but if you insist on these, just have YOUR courier do a pickup at THEIR place to avoid half the shipping costs. Or, have them shipped to a guy in the USA, nearby, after which they can go with regular USPS to Taiwan.

Harv, are the pictured mats the ones wyou are after? holy moly, must be a North American thing.  they look terrible and have no originality to them in a 116.  what interesting about mats, it seems NA cars often had Mercedes Benz or something else embroided into them, yet no othee location used such emrboidery.

No. Those are from Mercedes Motoring. http://www.mercedesmotoring.com/garagesale/4/w116_coco_mats

My understanding is that the mats with the embroidered logos on them are ''aftermarket'' but sold through Mercedes dealers with their blessing.

Did think of getting a set but had second thoughts. Thought about it for some time but came to the conclusion that they don't look good in the 116 and they are not cheap.

I think they fit better with older mb's W108 or W113,  or they are great for any brand of new car, but I agree they dont quite look correct in a W116.  They are excellent mats though. I do get really tired of floor mats bunching up that the dealer mats do in just a few years.
