Gents,

The chrome exterior trim on my '78 450 SEL is looking very dull in spots, and I have not had any success in brightening it up with the conventional methods. Does anyone have any secret recipes for shining up the trim..

Best Regards

You mean the stuff around the windows, sills etc all the annodized trim?  I don't think anyone's come up with a perfect remedy yet.  I've heard of using wd40, aluminium polish, rust kill, normal car polish, steel wool, mild abrasive cream polishes like autosol and buffing.  I've tried all that but still have water marks.  Car polish and a lot of elbow grease alone worked well to make them respectable from a few feet away.  I've heard spraying the parts with clear coat will make them look new.  Only downside is scratches will show still as they do for other methods and deep scratches might cause an uneveness to the clear coat around the scratch but on the upside it tends to "wet" the cloudiness and hide the watermarks plus the trim now has a protective coat.

If you're talking about chrome as in bumpers and grill, autosol is brilliant.
