Boot liner

What was the covering over the spare wheel? Was it carpet or something else? All I have in mine is the ribbed rubber sheet but as there is quite a thick area of sound insulation over the exhaust the overall covering is not level. Was there something just over the spare wheel to level it. Thought the rubber liner was an option and not standard. Have seen photos of 116s with grey carpet. What's right,  surely there must have been something quite thick to level the floor to the same as the insulation?

You should have a "MDF" type wood cover over the spare wheel well. Then on my 6.9 I have grey carpet with foam/rubber type backing.

The thick foam insulation if for the muffler heat.  The ribbed rubber mat 116-680-00-46 was used according to early VIN, and there was a thick anthracite #7086 carpet 116-680-00-45 used according to later VIN.  Directly over the spare tire is the hardboard cover, hinged on some variations. MDF wasnt invented then :)

The wheel wells also had different things according to VIN, early had ribbed rubber mats, and I think the later the carpet.

There was nothing else to level things out.

All carpet missing then including wheel wells. Have a black painted bonded board (not MDF)  with brass hinges (!) over spare wheel. Where can I get the carpet and was there any extra over the spare wheel to make up the level with the exhaust insulation? Don't think it can be heat insulation can it as it is just moulded foam like the foam under the bonnet. The rubber mat is in really good condition the reverse side looking new and was never turned over.

It is located just above the muffler, so I believe it is to insulate from heat into the trunk.

There was nothing else to level out the trunk.

Either rubber mat or carpet are your choices.  Some people use both

keep a watch on ebay or ebay.de and a carpet may turn up.

I have found at local parts store rubber backed needle felt pads that they sell to put under your car to collect drips.  It is very similar the the MB trunk carpet.  OReilly's .  called oil-dry garage guard  http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/OIL2/L90793/N1779.oap?ck=Search_N1779_-1_-1&categoryRedirect=N1779&pt=N1779&ppt=C0014

I plan on using it to make new trunk side panels some day. It's a little darker than MB, but if you do entire trunk with it no one would notice. You could also cut to fit for the trunk floor.

If you need the carpet piece that goes just on the inside back panel I have an extra one.

The insulation is closed cell foam, and it acts as sound insulation, not heat. The original carpet lining, sides and floor, is not available anymore.

Thanks for all that will have a look. You can also get a rubber backed felt which is used under rugs to stop them slipping. Thought that might do.

Not been on here for a while, anyhow, some comments about what was in my car:

1) Hinged board, but the hinges broke and the new replacements for MB were plastic not metal.

2) On top of the spare wheel is a disc of sponge (you can see it in the photo) the board then sits on top of this. My car is a later version, therefore it has carpet.

3) Please note, the sponge may be specific to alloy wheels, perhaps steelies didn't get the sponge spacer. (Also note, I have the original forged Bunts in my loft, using R129 alloys with spacers because I have more options when it comes to buying tyres).

Hope this helps.

Interesting the foam pad on top of the wheel. Nothing else? Certainly would stop any rattle and support the board. Mine has a big metal cup and wing nut, its on steel wheels, bit crude perhaps.

I think the foam pad for the tire is a great idea but have my doubts of originality.

This foam pad in question has no lineage either in EPC or factory parts books.  I, myself, have never seen this pad, and none of the factory pictures show this pad.  I'll have to second RUMB's claim of doubt, as well.

Hi Rumb and UTn_boy

Difficult to vouch for the originality of this foam disc, but the disc itself is machine cut and not a home made job. What I can say about the car, it that it was well cared for and un-molested when I bought it (43,000 miles). The car was always garaged, but was used in winter, so did suffer rust in the front fenders and the rear inner fenders - the outers were unaffected, but had to be sacrificed to repair the inners  >:( . The bare metal windows out respray reveal no accident damage previously. Internally if any covering or carpeting is removed, it looks pristine, the plating for instance still bright and new like the day it left the factory in Singelfingen.

The car came with a lot of original items: all M-B literature except the "first 1000 miles" cardboard hanger, the wallet key still sealed in a plastic holder (2 drivers keys, one in its original leather fob but no valet key which I replace via M-B). The original paper data tag is still attached to the rear seat back. The first aid kit is still sealed with cellophane!

In the boot, the spare wheel was still brand new, the alloy wheel card explaining about the wheel bolts and metal valve stems was still attached with wire to one of the Bundt spokes, and the jack has never been used. The tool roll was open and a few items missing, sadly the original plastic bag with the model designation long gone...

Who knows if this disc is an original M-B item, but it is what was in the car when I got it.
