I first thought that they weren't "MB", preferring the AMG Penta's and Aero's but now think the BBS rims look fantastic. Would hate to clean them, though :P ;)

As a rim, the BBS rims are better than pentas. They weigh much less which is the main purpose of alloy rims.

AMG sold this style rim along side their other rims.

So did AMG create the mesh wheels, and then sell the license to BBS?

I'm not sure it's right to say what the 'purpose' of an alloy wheel is. The purpose depends on your application. If weight is the real issue, go ahead and get some Rota 13lb wheels.

If good looks is your application, than any alloy wheel you prefer is the right choice

I would guess that they just sold them under license from BBS, as you say Bimmers of the same period had them also, I remember my uncle had a BMW 635CSI or whatever they are with these same style of rims,
they can be basically found on anything Mazda's, Capri's
