AMG steering wheel.

First priority for me is a clear, unobstructed view of the instruments at all times in all my usual driving positions and conditions - without that competing for attention with the outside view.   It's just the way I am.   ::)

If a monster 410mm (400 mm at a daring minimum) was / became available in the webbed style (which I do like - especially the  one in Oscar's photo #2 above), I'd be into it; otherwise, the standard wheel it is for my 116s.

At the right (i.e. fairly standard) size, a fancy timber-and-leather custom job might be nice, too - but as for the $600-$800 price tags - perhaps not tonight, Josephine.   :o   There are other more pressing projects afoot.

Indeed, Styria - and you can bet I've had the occasional daydream / wetdream over them.

However, it won't be this xmas - unless I unexpectedly find myself a sugar daddy!   ;D ;D

Indeed, old orangy is going quite cheap there with only 4 hours to go.

The description says, "Fits all non-airbag Mercedes".

Really? Does this mean steering wheels are mostly interchangable between early-ish models?

Little bit more food for thought.

Here's the one I got of the bay a little while back.  The centre cap was already Mercedes but a small one and old and didn't look so good.  So I fit a centre cap off a W116 wheel.

Not AMG, but she gets plenty compliments.

Oh yes, Cam, I saw that wheel in your hill climb vids.  :)

Nice wheel, although like the other smaller wheel it looks like your gauges are blocked a bit. Though I can't imagine that would matter when your racing. ;)

If the vendor truly is an M-B parts supplier, oughtn't he know that his claim "Fits all non air-bag model Mercedes passanger [sic] cars" is false?  What about the shaft-diameter and spline-count/size change on the 116 about 1977/8?

So it WON'T fit all non-airbagged Benzes at all!

Don't these wheels fit onto an adaptor boss? My Momo wheel, smaller cheap leather wheel, and tiny vulgar Japanese flea market wheel all fit - to the adaptor. But the adaptor will not fit my 1974 SLC, which is a pity since its original wheel is very worn. And I cannot find an adaptor for the earlier shaft/spline.

My AMG with webbed design is a full complete fit Mercedes Hub with all the horn contacts and wiring built in so that it is a direct bolt on replacement.

All this talk has made me interested in it a bit more so I have removed the centre moulded web which just presses over the spokes and have filled the crack with black flexible sealant.

I will leave it to set for a day or so and see what it looks like.

If it doesn't work I will take the centre to someone clever and see if it can be repaired more professionally.

i just installed the AMG Steering wheel on my car with no issues. It does Block the instruments quite badly, i will take a photo of it in my car tomorrow to give you guys an idea. it does flow with the car very nicely, i must admit. They do pop on ebay a lot, i bough mine i think for 65 euros, maybe i bit more i can't remember. My wheel is also a direct bolt in, has all the wires built in for the horn.

You and your bargains. :D ;)

But seriously, good stuff. It looks like they can be had for not too much with a bit of hunting. Although the dash obstruction turns me off a bit.

EDIT: Although, I was just looking at the pics and noticed that the webbed design, doesn't appear too bad in terms of blocking the speedo, if at all.

With all this talk of wheels I fitted my AMG wheel and include before and after photo's of the view through both wheels.

The view through the AMG wheel is not quite as bad as the picture suggests as there is a shadow from the flash but basically the speedo is only visible to 80Km/hr and the Tacho to 2000. The fuel gauage is not visible.

The wheel does feel really good and seems to sharpen the steering with the smaller diameter so I will try it out for a couple of weeks.

It does seem absurd that if you want to use the performance the standard wheel helps with the visibility while the sporty wheel is for gentle cruising???

Looks like a big difference to me. Have you adjusted the seat down to it's lowest point ?

Good point Craig - will check but I usually sit as near to the floor as possible so it's probably already there.
