Since the chrome is so crappy, isn't there some alternative? PB may be right in saying straight black would look quite acceptable....

They are absolutely identical ! I buy these old switches when I see them cheap - which is not too often these days. The chrome peels off all of them at some point. Fortunately, I have a good collection of good ones, and replace them when and if needed.

The single rear switches are available with black bezels - however - youll have to obtain them from your friendly BMW dealer. They are exactly the same, except for the bezel. They did however, actually design their own switches for the fronts, so you wont see the double switches used in beemers.

these are chrome cars mate, chrome around the windows, switches, around the doors etc...

what would be ideal is to have the surround piece fabricated up from metal and plated.
and then sell 10,000 of them to make a profit out of the venture.

without getting off topic it is rather sad things like this, the cheapening of these cars by Mercedes, yes it is a topic we have lamented before, I just think it is a bit disappointing.

Oh for sure.

I've got nothing against chrome itself, I love the look of it. It's just these window switches, which are plastic and have chrome on them. I think they should have made them out of steel.

I think at the time these were made, it was high tech. Remenber the chrome plastic Falcon dashboards of the '70's ? They just haven't stood the test of time. You can get them re-vacuumed. I have a 1959 Gaggia Espresso machine and it has a similar "chromed" plate on the front, which I had re-done in Melbourne. See photo below. It's the wrinkly bit at the front. They call the process "vacuum metallising".

flippin place in maddington just at the bottom of that big arse hill (greenmount?) before mundaring...it will cost us 100 bucks to drive out there (actually, it probably would to get there and back now i think about it!)...i dont think they were open on weekends either which was a pain in the ass...although ill have a bit of spare time in a couple of weeks and if i go out there and you havent yet, ill let you know!
alternatively, if you give me the shifter gate, ill do it for you as a favour :D

Buy your own shifter gate Doctor Nathan  ;)

If they aren't open on the weekends its going to be virtually impossible for me to go there - Unless i do something outlandish, and walk into a post office and post it there!

I may well have to do that.

If you are going up that way soon, ill be more than happy to give you mine so you can get them to do something with it. I hope they are magicians ;)

Flaked chrome replaced with black....

Just sandpaper and lots of coats of aerosol matt black. Seems to stick ok, no sign of peeling or flaking in 3 years. Please ignore vulgar steering wheel, now replaced with the Momo I originally got for a 928 S4 I had for a while.

Peter,
did you put leather over your burl centre console (ie is it still under there?) or did you put the leather over a lesser piece of material...if you did still have the centre console and would consider parting with it, what sort of condition is it in?
regards

Peter doesn't look a bad job at all,

you wouldn't really notice the lack of chrome unless you was really looking for it,

I think I'll have to open an antique shop one day just to clear out all my "junk" - mind you, this bit of Gaggia junk is worth about $7,000.
