Regarding the redline question, yes, earlier 6.9's have a 5000rpm redline and later ones a 5300.

According to brlufer, owner of the green car pictured in this topic his owners manual also shows a picture of the instruments with a 5000rpm redline, see below. He has done some research on this and asked me to post the following:

The issue has been discussed before in other forums as well and the consensus is that MB did not change the specs on the M100's installed in 6.9's but for some reason adopted a 5000rpm redline on early cars. The EPC does not provide a VIN cut off an lists the same p/n 001 542 61 16 as the tach for all 6.9's

One link where this issue was discussed: http://www.m-100.cc/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4796

Then on youtube you have a couple more videos with 5000 and 5300 tachs

Another wonderful product.

Carl, I checked my spare 6.9 speedo and it has the max gear speed marks in the same spot... I'm not sure that this could be an error?

Tim

Hi Tim,

That's odd, here is a 6.9 Speedo as I know it.

Whoops, thanks Joe, I replied to Tim before I saw your post.

A quick note about tyres.  Be very careful using a 205/70-14 on a 6.9.  (Apart from the fact its diameter is too small) Most tyres in that size carry a 91 or 92 load rating.  The 6.9 used a 215/70-14 with a load rating of 94.  I'd check your tyre placard to make sure you can use less than a 94 load rating, obviously not just for safety, but for insurance/legal compliance too.

Although the XWXs have a very low tread wear index, just 100, I get surprising life from them.  The 280 SE has 23,000 kms on a set, about 20% tread left.  But with the 6.9s power, if you use it, I'd expect to get half that from the rears.

Regards,

Carl.

That makes sense, re the 5000rpm redline.

Both my spare speedo and the one in my car share the same markings.

Carl, unfortunately in Brazil we have no choice but to use the 205/70-14's Importing tires is prohibitively expensive so the only other option is to upgrade to 15inch bundt, which we may still do in the case of this particular car.

Tks for the tips.

That is one awesome restoration job a great color!  Is that an original color?  I had mine repainted back to its original Anthracite because it only seemed right in my restoration.  Your interior looks great!  Congrats and do enjoy that car!

Hi 1974450SEL,

Yes, color is the original DB876 Cypress Green metallic

I am a stickler for original colors so we always advise customers to keep it factory when doing a restoration. Anthracite works great on 116's, it let's the chrome shine in the same way 876 does so wise choice on your part.

Tks,

Joe

I want my 450 SE in that colour!

I made a mistake on the color code for the 6.9, it is actually DB876 not 834, sorry for the confusion.

Tks,

Goldstar Auto can make that happen for you.  Just a bit, um, expensive...

Wonder what a restoration of this magnitude would cost? im guessing more than the cost of a new large car? very impressive. There must be a huge satisfaction you get out of your job!
