6.9 chin spoiler repair

I finally got around to repairing my 6.9's damaged chin spoiler. There was a clean crack horizontally across the central section below the radiator. I used "plastics glue", which is basically a "Super Glue" with an extra primer for gluing ABS Plastic etc. Then I got my soldering iron and melted the plastic along the full length of the crack on both sides.

I might add that for once, this was done outside and with a gas and fumes twin filter respirator that I happened to find under the house.

It appears to be quite a solid repair, although I will try to avoid carparks and the like.

Sure, it's not the most attractive repair, but it's good to know that it's intact.

just got back from a driving holiday...
TJ, dad has used a plastics repair person (i could try and get details) where they plastic weld!

when restoring my 'vintage' tamiya remote control car (read nerd alert here), i found a technique where damaged plastic bodies were repaired using a soldering iron. what you would do is run the soldering iron along the cracks in the body to join them, then melt some plastic back over the crack...after this, you sand and paint. i did it on my willies m38 (no comment PB) and it worked a treat, not sure if it would work on thick plastic like this thogh?

I took some photos today, PB, and I fitted the 16" Centra rims... just to see what they looked like on the car.

I find the squared off holes to be more suited to a something like a 700 Series Volvo rather than an S-Class, as there is nothing else on the car that is sharp and angular to look at. This makes the combination somewhat difficult to look at from certain angles.

Anyway, more on that when I upload the pics and start a new topic (no card reader at the moment). ;)

The soldering iron trick was exactly what I used, Nathan. It seems to be quite rigid with no signs of breaking. I reckon I'll get the wet and dry onto it at some point to get rid of the melt line. One doesn't want to breath in the fumes though. ;)

I went for a bit of an outing down to Mosman Bay in it today, as the weather was simply too good not to go out. I went over some speed humps, but haven't destroyed it yet (touch wood)!

Nathan, none of your hobbies would come across as surprising - the most amusing one however is your collection of Phil Collins, Eric Clapton and Elton John paraphernalia. The life sized Elton John statue wearing the arseless black leather pants in your bathroom is slightly disturbing though.. ;)

now now, dont bring phillip into this! ;)
