Title: 3D Printed Trunk Triangle Bracket
Post by: sutekh on 21 June 2022, 06:01 PM
My 300SD came with a reflective triangle in the trunk when I purchased it, but as a US-spec car, it never had the corresponding bracket to hold it in place on the boot lid. Worse still, I haven't been able to even track down an actual picture of the w116-specific part, much less find one for sale.

After a couple months of cancelled orders (plenty of sellers list the associated part numbers for sale, but no one can actually get them) and zero hits on my eBay saved searches, I got tired of waiting. I took several measurements, spent some quality time in my favorite CAD program, and the below images are what I came up with...

Along with a bit of standard hardware I had on hand, it holds it in place very securely :) Sharing for posterity, and I might be willing to make a few more if anyone is interested.

Ah, this warms my heart! Congrats from a fellow maker on a job well done!
I've made and 3D printed a good few parts for my W124s, not many for the W116 yet.

It'd be nice if you could share the model on Thingiverse or maybe Printables from Prusa.

Very nice! I can get you pictures of the one from my car if you are interested, or perhaps I should try my hand at it. What CAD program are you using? I know Solidworks and Inventor but haven't used them since graduating because they are expensive.

If you know Inventor, you will feel at home in Fusion 360, which is free for private home use. Not as powerful as Inventor, but does the job.

Nice collection! I have a bunch of w116, w126, and e28 parts I need to upload. For now, here's this part at least on Thingiverse:

This was drawn in Sketchup (quick and dirty), but I typically use Fusion 360 for anything more complicated. SolidWorks is great too, but I haven't had access to a licensed copy in several years.

I'd love to see a pic of the real McCoy if you'd post one. I've found line drawings of the w116 holder in various online parts diagrams, but couldn't locate an actual picture. Every photo seems to be taken from a few feet back with the trunk raised and the vertical portion of the lid cuts off the area I'm interested in!
