280S now Two-Tone Parchment/Bambus, LOL

I swapped out the seats for the parchment MB-Tex variety from the red car I wrecked. I was actually going to throw these seats out but thought hey, the leather in the 280S is attrocious (driver's seat had a huge hole in it and the rear seat backrest stitching had let go). So now I have some nice MB tex seats, which you can't beat for durability in my opinion.

Pics to come shortly. 8)

What spurred this on is I am seriously rationalising my collection of parts.

I also drove the 280S on some SERIOUSLY corrugated dirt roads on the weekend. That was fun, and nothing broke or fell off either!

So can I just clarify that you prefer MB-Tex to leather?

TJ 450

Indeed, I prefer MB-Tex for practical reasons. I also fitted Tex seats to my 6,9 because those seats were even more sun baked. Of course leather in good condition is great though.

Here's what it looks like now;

I think MB tex is great. As far as vinyls go, it's pretty damn good. I often see cars for sale advertised as having leather seats when in fact they have MB tex, so it's good enough to fool people. It's thick and soft and it's not all shiny-looking like regular vinyls. And it's just so hard-wearing. It stands up to our brutal heat and blazing sun with virtually no upkeep needed at all, whereas leather would need constant treatments to prevent it from drying out and perishing and even then the leather would likely fade over time. The MB tex in my W108 looks perfect after 42 years.

Have you got any good tips for cleaning mould and gunk from it?

The MB tex can sure take a beating. It's tough stuff. I cleaned mine a few years ago using a low-pressure steam cleaner and the heat and moisture didn't harm it at all. If yours is moldy and gunky, I'd say you could use a little detergent in warm water, a damp cloth, a scrubbing brush and a lot of elbow grease. As long as you don't drench it until it's soaked and you keep wetness levels somewhere between 'moist' and 'damp' you should be fine. Then wipe all the detergent off with a clean damp cloth and let it dry.
There's vinyl-specific cleaners you could buy from the store but I would imagine that a little laundry detergent mixed with hot water would be OK. I had a bar of that soap that has ground pumice in it and I veeeery gently rubbed it on as a mild abrasive to any spots of built-on gunk. Applying a vinyl protectant after it's all finished would probably be a good idea.

Deep stains might be permanent or might need professional cleaning products or steam cleaning. Or seat covers to hide them. :P

There was mastic sealant smeared over these seats in places and I just used a general purpose spray cleaning solution and a damp cloth, scrubbing it off. The rest of it got a wipe down and was good.

I'd look into a carpet/textile cleaning type applicator and soapy water solution to clean the engrained stuff out.

Mongrel!!!!   ;)  I love chocolate!!!

Back on topic I think vinegar is a good natural disinfectant and may kill mould even if diluted.  Try some on a test patch first to make such it doesn't stain....

Those seats look like new! I wish mine were that nice. If you had the deluxe door panels, you could have put the parchment cards in them, too.

Modern vinyl recolor sprays could take care of the two-tone look rather nicely.  I've been amazed at the quality work and durability I've seen on some local Hoon Tuner mobiles.

edit:  Was that the correct use of "hoon?"  Hard to think in upside-down you know.

LOL yep thats fine John,

A Hoon is basically someone who has loud and dangerous fun.

Wikipedia definition is a bit harsh, inject a bit of fun into the meaning and its closer to the mark.
