Finally took the dive and began the restoration.

I can't wait to see the process and final result! Using the W123 yellow fog lights in place of the high beams is an interesting touch. There was a Milan Brown W116 300SD taxi in Washington with those fog lights, too, and I thought it looked neat.

Slowly moving along with first coat of 2k primer. This is a budget build.

Oxford White. It's cheap and I am finally going to have a white exterior/black interior benz. I'm not even talking w116, it's so hard to find this color combo on any older benz :) Now I know this isn't the og color, but I don't have $$$ to restore her to originality. Btw I got this car for $500 a year ago with a bad engine and everything else was just worn down to the knob.  I saved her from the crusher.

Got to spray some paint today. I only did a couple of panels but it's a good start, can't find wait to drive her on the road again. I took pics with my phone so they might not look that good.

At least you are doing a thorough job of it. It will probably turn out a lot better than if you took the complete car to a Maaco and gave them $1,000. You won't have overspray on things, and won't be opening the doors to find the jambs a different color.

Getting ready to spray the engine bay. Getting it clean & degreased is a nightmare.  :'( Just imagine 36 years of running a diesel engine (that produced all kinds of oily deposits) in that bay.

Can anyone guess what's wrong with this tag?

Well, the color is no longer Astral Silver.

Bingo, thanks. I wonder if I could try to re-stamp a white color code on there just for fun ;) Finally got the dreaded engine bay done.

May I just say that this is awesome.
I am along the same lines...
I love these 300SD and cannot comprehend how some people just ride them into the ground and then throw them away.
The BEST car Mercedes ever built.
Having said that , only 24000 of these were built for US market only (that also makes it worldwide).
Seems like a lot, but they are rapidly decimated by the current picn'whatevers. Onemonthandchuck junkyards....
Keep up the good work....
I am impressed somebody is attempting this and going for it !

I agree, just the other day I was over at pick n pull and there was a nice '79 300sd with a dented fender and peeling clear on roof. The interior was mostly gone but I could tell it was kept in good shape. As I kept looking inside I found a registration card from 1997 with a bank lien on it (car was sold through a dealer). Then I found a more recent card (2012, without lien) someone owned this car for many years and let it go after minor damage.
