I can't wait to see the process and final result! Using the W123 yellow fog lights in place of the high beams is an interesting touch. There was a Milan Brown W116 300SD taxi in Washington with those fog lights, too, and I thought it looked neat.

Slowly moving along with first coat of 2k primer. This is a budget build.

What colour are you painting it?

Oxford White. It's cheap and I am finally going to have a white exterior/black interior benz. I'm not even talking w116, it's so hard to find this color combo on any older benz :) Now I know this isn't the og color, but I don't have $$$ to restore her to originality. Btw I got this car for $500 a year ago with a bad engine and everything else was just worn down to the knob.  I saved her from the crusher.

Got to spray some paint today. I only did a couple of panels but it's a good start, can't find wait to drive her on the road again. I took pics with my phone so they might not look that good.

At least you are doing a thorough job of it. It will probably turn out a lot better than if you took the complete car to a Maaco and gave them $1,000. You won't have overspray on things, and won't be opening the doors to find the jambs a different color.

Getting ready to spray the engine bay. Getting it clean & degreased is a nightmare.  :'( Just imagine 36 years of running a diesel engine (that produced all kinds of oily deposits) in that bay.

May I just say that this is awesome.
I am along the same lines...
I love these 300SD and cannot comprehend how some people just ride them into the ground and then throw them away.
The BEST car Mercedes ever built.
Having said that , only 24000 of these were built for US market only (that also makes it worldwide).
Seems like a lot, but they are rapidly decimated by the current picn'whatevers. Onemonthandchuck junkyards....
Keep up the good work....
I am impressed somebody is attempting this and going for it !

I agree, just the other day I was over at pick n pull and there was a nice '79 300sd with a dented fender and peeling clear on roof. The interior was mostly gone but I could tell it was kept in good shape. As I kept looking inside I found a registration card from 1997 with a bank lien on it (car was sold through a dealer). Then I found a more recent card (2012, without lien) someone owned this car for many years and let it go after minor damage.

No need to shy from white colour.

There use to be a saying that Mercedes stands out only in black or in white colour.

Check the white SE from Russia (member here)... it looks magnificent.

IMO it is more important to paint the details, like you do, to make the car look as if white was original colour.

Wow, I see lots of good parts on those cars! Nice grille, fog lights, decent-looking dashboard wood with the idle control knob that the later 300SDs don't have. If the engines appear to be junk, and still have the intake and exhaust manifolds without the EGR valves, they are worth getting. Mine was made with an EGR valve, and at some point, I want the older-style manifolds. This makes me want to visit the wrecking yards again, but I really don't have the money.

Sprayed third coat today, got a few runs. This is single stage urethane paint so I'm sure it's fixable. I was contemplating to buff the whole car, but now I have to. Anyone got any experience with buffing this kind of paint?

Wow! It's looking great in the photos. Looks like the car will look brand new once it's finished, at least from a few feet away. 8)
But yikes, I whine at the thought of replacing that fuel filler door - be careful not to scratch the bodywork!  :o Whoever devised that contraption was laughing mechanically as they did it.  ;D

I think I'm right in saying that you hoped to fit Euro style bumpers and lights once you were done? With those and some refurbed wheels, and the new paint there, the car will look schmick as. 8) I like the white on black.

It's coming along nicely! One thing I should point out is that the trim around the front windshield is actually supposed to be installed in the rubber before the windshield is put on the car. I don't think you can get the trim in once the windshield is installed.

Yeah, aftermarket windshield seals tend to do that. I tried a ÜRO brand seal in a W111, and couldn't get it to fit in the car without the trim popping out. Then I tried a Febi. It was a little better, but had the same problem. The notch in the seal doesn't have the lip to grab the trim like the factory seals. Then I got a genuine Mercedes seal, and it went in on the first try, and actually sucked in the trim instead of popping it out.

Thanks Squiggle. I'm going badgeless for now. I do have some ideas as to what I want to put back there but it's gonna have to wait.

Finally got to drive the w116 to school. It's barely street legal but I had to get it going to save fuel (I had to drive my diesel truck while working on 300sd)

Thanks, I'm just happy to be driving the car again. Next I have to address small things like moldings and interior pieces. But that's going to be another thread. Thanks for all the views and replies it helped me through this project.

Nice work, you took in what you could. Most folks don't get to finish their projects, or rather take too long.
I know it ain't easy.
