Title: "automatic" decal on trunk
Post by: floyd111 on 08 November 2016, 05:32 PM
What's the story there? I see cars randomly fitted with that decal.

As far as I know the "Automatic" decal was deleted for W116 and onwards. But some people put it on, the one used on W108, I cut off the locator pins and use high quality double sided tape to stick it on.

it was sort of a status symbol on W113's in Europe

All W108/9's and W113's sold in the UK and Ireland seem to have had the Automatic badge on the boot lid (unless they were actually manual transmission, of course!). The badge seems to have been unavailable (or a rarely-chosen option) in mainland Europe, as I have never seen a W113 there with it. When the company I used to work for took a UK-market RHD W113 and W109 to The Techno Classica show at Essen, loads of people from Germany and other LHD markets commented that they had never seen these badges before.
If you do have a car with an Automatic badge, mind it well, as it is NLA, due to its limited use and low demand today, but you may have a boot lid with too many holes if you lose it, or it gets damaged.

I've noticed that people in different countries around the world have different attitudes to car badging, with some countries (Germany springs to mind) having minimal badges on home-market models, with many cars having no badges at all, other than the MB three-pointed star/Audi rings, etc, whereas other countries (Italy, for example) are obsessed with which variant of the model you were able to afford. I used to own a UK-market '93 Audi 80 (Audi 90 in US) which had the (relatively new at the time) 16v 4-cylinder engine and was a quattro drivetrain. The boot lid had "80" on the left, and "16v" on the right. On holidays in Italy, I saw an identical Italian-market one, but it had "80 quattro" on the left and "2.0E 16v" on the right.

I just found this in the Option list:
254   ELIMINATION OF LETTERING ""AUTOMATIC"""
Seems that the W116 did have this lettering as a standard in some places?

Code 254 was standard.................

so that mean that the Automatic decal was optional still? ;D

Another fun one I found:
814   ELIMINATION OF REAR DOORS
Ever seen one of those?

Haha.  No, Stan.  It still wasn't an option.  ;)

By the way, Type17, the "Automatic" lettering plate is, in fact, still readily available new from Mercedes.  Part number 112-817-06-15, and is around 100 Euros.  It's not rare, it's just that a lot of markets didn't receive the badge, and so it's unusual for the majority of people to see.

That's good to hear - last time I looked it up on EPC (a few years ago, to be fair), it was marked NLA, and the dealer confirmed it to be so at the time.

P.S. The VIN number of that car with no rear doors is WDB11602412050885 if anyone wants to look it up to confirm it left the factory that way.

That car was discussed on this forum about 10 years ago I believe.

I think it may have been in passing in another thread, and pretty hard to search for now.

Looks like a Swedish "Epa Traktor" conversion, although a bit long.

A lot of times, something that is only available through Classic will show up as no longer available in the Paragon dealer network.  Consequently, dealerships will tell us that the part in question is no longer available.  Even though Paragon says "no longer available", if the dealership orders it anyway it'll show up if the part is available through classic.

Why would you want it any way? Mercedes are automatics why would you want to advertise it? And if its going to be a sticker it would be a no even if it were on the datacard. It was obviously only a marketing ploy in countries where automatics were not common.

I second that, on all points. Finding a shifter here is as hard as finding an automatic back in Holland. They were always sold more expensive, a thing for the rich. Right.

Couldn't have put it better myself. Got to keep the standard up.

How about a W116 with the elimination of rear doors option AND the automatic emblem on the trunk?  ;D

Can it get any lower? How about a candy apple paint finish and that ride height adjustment that you can make it hop? We should list all the bad things people have done to the 116. Did see the one I mentioned it was for sale having been used in shows. They should all be banned from owning a 116.

regarding the last grey car.  I found that new directional tires do not work well on w126 and probably w116.  They will cause the car to be pulled strongly by road wear and ribbed roads.

Any specific brand/model?

I have Dunlop Sport BluResponse in 205/65R15 on the car, and haven't noticed anything unusual in how it behaves. Maybe it's down to specific tread pattern?

I ended up with pretty much the identical tires as on that 126 on my 116 - someone offered me a killer deal on a set of 18" wheels with tires just like that, and the offset just worked well enough with some fender rolling for the 116. I actually have to say that they perform quite well on the car, and the car feels a lot less "spongy" and I seem to enjoy the less amount of roll and more direct road feel of them quite a bit!
