I know I've hijacked the original thread sorry scraf, perhaps it might be better to start a new one?

Regards,

Carl

Not at all, Carl, very useful information, well it will be for me if the recession ever ends.

For the minute I'm just trying to find the cheapest way to get through my technical check. :(

My 280S rides on 175/80 R14 tires and 14X6 Benz 1 aka Bundt wheels. what's the equivalent size of 185 HR14? 185 HR14 tires are no longer sells in the Philippines.

s class

The direct translation of the obsolete size 185R14 to the modern terminology would, I believe, have an 82 aspect ratio.  185/80R14 is the closest available size.

The XWX sadly has the stiffest sidewall.

Is this overcome with using larger rims with a smaller sidewall?

I have been running Michelin (sports) 225/55-16 on AMG 16" rims for 6 years and when my steering linkages and suspension are in good order, the handling is great :)

The wider, lower profile tyres do probably reveal steering and suspension issues more than the original tyres.

Just picked up the car from Tyresome, I went with the Toyo 330's - I can not believe the difference having good tyres makes on this car, it's like a completely different car now.  The handling is vastly improved, cornering is fun, the ride quality in general is much better and there is an overall reduction in strange noises from the front suspension, especially turning at low speeds.

My only experience with Toyo 330's was on a Fiat some years ago, and I remember that I was very impressed with them.

I ran the 16" Centra rims, with 225 55 R16s on the 6.9. That turned the marginal front suspension into "completely stuffed". I seem to recal reading that you need to have the front end alignment re-set if you opt for wider tyres etc.

That's very interesting about the XWXs Carl, it sounds like they are still the ideal choice for these cars, albeit a rather expensive one.

Wouldn't be surprised, I bought my 450 SEL with rather large rims

Back 225/50 R16 92V
Front 205/55 ZR16 91W ( for those that understand that stuff )

Eight months ago there was some horrible squealing coming from the front of the car, I thought "Oh noes, a wheel bearing"

Turned out a strip of the inside of one of the front tyres had wrapped itself around the inside of the wheel, an easy fix thankfully, replaced the front tyres. Eight months later the front tyres have failed the technical check for the same wear.

Will have to find a non cowboy type outfit that actually knows what they are doing for a new realinement I guess.

Even on 16" rims wouldn't the 205/55s be far too small?

I wanted to purchase some good tires for my 450SE but could find very little in my size. Michelin had the correct size but were only S rated. I ended up buying Maxxis tires. I haven't had any problems with them but they definitely are not good in the winter. I had to drive home in a snow storm a couple of years ago and the car didn't t hold the road very well. Since I only use my car in good weather and put it away in winter, the lack of grip really doesn't matter. What are we going to do when the tire companies stop making tires to fit are cars altogether?

Are all of the Bundt rims 15"? I never liked the look of those rims but if there are tires readily available to fit them it may be a good idea to upgrade to get better tires.

s class

Nearly all bundt rims are 14". Generally, 4 cyl models had 5.5 inch wide rims, 6 inch for 6 cyl, and 6.5 inch for v8's.

The only 15 inch diameter bundts available are 7 inch wide, and are very rare and expensive.
