450 SEL Correct Backpressure

My mechanic said I needed a new exhaust resonator because even after replacing the fuel filter and fixing the distributor the car will not accelerate and has popping/backfire. My question is will the new resonator create the correct exhaust backpressure? What is the correct backpressure?

that sounds more like a possibility.

Is the mechanic suggesting the resonator rather than the muffler?...or both? By the way the standard accepted backpressure is about 1.5psi.

So does the thing sound gagged?......get someone to run the motor and  after a few good rev ups turn it off and see if the exhuast outlet continues to "Exhaust" . Tape a fine piece of paper to the outlet .if it continues to flutter after the engine is killed, I'd be suspicious of a blocked exhaust system.

Yes, the mechanic is saying it's the resonator that's probably plugged. Those are great ideas.
