What have you done for your W116 today?

Today I adjusted the slip clutch on my sunroof, adjusted the hood bumpers so it would sit straight, installed warm-white LED interior bulbs, and most importantly, finished remediating the trunk rust on both sides of my "rust free car" <-- seller's sworn affirmation.

Thankfully, nothing had rusted through, and I believe I've addressed the water ingress (plugged drains and a disconnected fuel door hose). Steps to resolve included a) strip the paint, b) soak in evapo-rust for 12hrs, c) apply KBS Rust Blast (acidic galvanizer), d) two coats of POR-15, e) two more coatings of POR top coat feathered in (not pictured).

I hate rust >:(

Last week i noticed that my fuel pump was leaking petrol , i still have the original D-jetronic fuel pump , and i knew that there were two O-Rings in the front section of the pump that can couse the leakage , so i replaced them after finding the measurements of these (33X2mm) O-Rings on this site https://jetronic.org/de/d-jetronic/benzinpumpe , the inside of the pump looked clean and rustfree but the outside of the pump and the brackets looked terrible and even more worse after cleaning them , so today some cleaning and spraypaint for the fuel pump and the brackets and the protective cover are sandblasted and powdercoated
and i also found in a local webshop 11.5mm cloth covered fuel hose for between the pump and damper , i also have 11mm hose so i take a look what fits the best , and i also have cloth covered 8mm hose for between the pump and filter and from filter to the metal fuel line so it all has the same look

Hi JohnnyW116,

That is very interesting. You have done a very nice job in refurbishing the parts.
My preference had been to sourse a new Nissan pump as suggested on another thread but supply issue arose.
I may end up, short term at least, putting my original pump into service.
Did you sourse the O rings from Mercededsourse or an EU source.

Bill

Hello Gurrier  ,

Thank You ! the pump was still running smooth and no issues at idle speed or driving or starting the car , and after removing the front section the inside looked really good so i thought lets go looking for some fresh O-Rings , so i found the measurements of the O-Rings on the internet 33x2mm offcourse made from petrol resistant material like Viton , i bought these local at Technirub an rubber parts specialist
https://www.technirub.nl/o-ringen-en-o-ring-snoeren/o-ringen-viton-80-shore-a.html?snoerdikte_num=2-13&inwendige_diameter_num=33-1160&p=1 , i saw the tread about the Nissan pump , and i think it's not an bad idea to buy a spare new pump in the near future now that there still available

Greetings : John

Hi Gurrier  ,

i noticed that all these Nissan 17011-p7211 pumps seems to be only for sale on ebay
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2047675.m570.l1313&_nkw=17011-P7211+&_sacat=0

Yes, saw those but shipping varies between $6 and $117 so there is something wrong.   I am trying through Nissan dealership before I go ebay route.

Repaired the distance counter.
It already started to fail last year but after some kilometers apparently changed its mind and kept on working without issues.
Last weekend it seized again and I decided to fix it on a rainy sunday.
The bad guy was again the grey cast toothed wheel which went loose on its shaft, I could rotate it by finger in still assembled condition.
I proceeded as repeatedly illustrated in different Mercedes forums and pushed the now pretty loose shaft out with a toothpick. It is not fixed like e.g. on W123 units.
Murphy had it that the tooth pick slipped out and I took the chance to remove all 6 number wheels with tweezers and cleaned them with a little stiff brush and ethanol. Some numbers were nearly unidentifiable from dark dust. In order to have access to the wheels it is necessary to loosen the shaft with the six little grey plastic cogs at one end which sits in front of the large counter. With the main number wheels removed I was able to clean the still assembled short distance counter wheels also with a long brush and ethanol from above. The wheels could be rotated by carefully pressing the reset lever to the point where the wheels can rotate more or less free. It takes several times of applying ethanol on the wheels and check by dipping the brush on a white piece of cloth until the solvent is nearly colorless.
I made a slight mark into the shaft where the cast cog sits with a wire cutter to fix the cast cog. Re-inserting the cleaned wheels, setting the mileage and re-fixing the front shaft is a bit annoying.
I was not entirely confident that I would get it done but eventually it worked out and the unit stood the test with an electric drill.
Didn't know that the lower right wheel was white  8) .
Nice view:

Mine has gotten the greatest gift of all - to be driven!  Sadly my daily driver (GL450) was demolished from behind by an 18-wheeler a few days by an ago.  Nobody hurt, thank god, and I'm looking for a replacement. But in the meantime the 6.9 is promoted to daily driver.  What an odd world we live in.  Cheers,
-Dave

Today the pump is back on the car and works fine without leaking petrol , but there is one more seal/o-ring at the electromotor and the pressed on housing that can couse leaking in the future , but for the time being it works fine , but i also bought yesterday on ebay a new Nissan 17011-p7211 pump to be on the safe side with availability and to have a brand new spare pump standby

Thank you  , and Roger Whittaker is indeed absolute 24 carat Gold ,i remember in the early 90's i went to Essen in Germany to a car show , and in Essen i saw giant billboards almost everywhere with Roger Whittaker on it , and i never knew up to that moment he also sings in German , but a Becker is on the wishlist i have a 80's Blaupunkt in my W116 and i also have a "modern" radio with usb out of sight in the glove compartment (mounted with an self made bracket on the upper side of the glovebox) the blaupunkt has separate speakers so i can use both radio's

Had some rain, which helped trace a leak in the passenger footwell. Had thought it was a hole in the bulkhead but thankfully not.

New windscreen seal on the horizon.

Is it meant to pool up like that?

Yup it will pool there but you need to seal the new gasket between the window and the gasket with 3M Glazing and Bedding Compound when you install the new gasket.  The window design makes it drop down in the corners so pooling is unavoidable.

Good to know.
I'm tempted to have a professional do the job, but I'd like the opportunity to deal with any corrosion revealed before refitting. This will take some thought.
