Simple question that is bugging me, looking at buying a 280SE and was wondering what the circled item is for.

Thanks.

... you probably know that the hoses for heater inlet and outlet is missing (upper area torpedo wall, right and left of engine, respectively)

Not just the hoses are missing, the vacuum actuator for the heater valve too.

Thanks guys, yeah am aware of the heater hose missing, normal practice here (in always hot Malaysia) to keep A/C as cold as possible, however as ptashek mentions, does a missing vacuum actuator for a heater valve impair the normal functioning of A/C controls?

Cheers lads.

I also noticed that car has rear only self leveling suspension if still operational and the York AC compressor has been traded in for perhaps a modern Sanden one with a changeover kit?

Yep cruise control actuator, not sure where in Malaysia you could use it for more than 1 minute? And yes, hot, damn hot!

If the line that would normally go to the actuator is plugged correctly, there should be no impact due to vacuum leaks.

You'd loose the climate control side of it, but as you wrote, that's apparently intentional :)
