Hood Emblem Repair Kit

Do you need some sort of a special tool to get these things rebuilt?

Case in point, the first picture we note that the sleeve doesn't quite fit into the chamber. It is tapered in such a way that it doesn't fit in this way, but will actually fit in the other way round which I find strange. Which brings me to the next part.

On the second picture we note that with the spring hooked up to the emblem and placed in the proper divets that spring is actually quite close to the chamber where we can insert the pin, however, the is now way to pick at the spring enough place to put pliers to pull it out.

On the third picture we have the said pin which will secure the whole assembly.

This has me stumped although I have a strange feeling that the solution to getting the pin in is very simple, just can't figure it out at the moment in time.

I would greatly appreciate it if anyone that has rebuilt their hood emblem can kindly walk me through the process.

Thank you.

Ok...with your video I was able to determine that the cylinder is indeed supposed to go into the housing (which it did not previously). I don't know what type of old stock I bought but its got Mercedes all over it and it doesn't fit the new stock rosette. Anyway, took some sandpaper to it and now it fits. Measured and it was off my 0.5mm, how strange.

Thanks for the help!!

Excellent topic as I've been gathering all info to repair/replace my vandalized Hood Star. Have been unable to locate the Mercedes  repair kit, even thru the Mercedes Classic Center. Did order what was supposed to be W116 replacement from an outfit in Istanbul, Turkey only to realize it was for a later Mercedes model. Wish it had worked as those folks provide very fast service!
I did locate a salvage unit on Ebay which can work for now but is nowhere near the quality of my original item. Does anyone have a lead on either repair kits or surplus W116 Hood Emblems?
