So 3,500 miles in, and checking my oil today, I found it wasn't as much low as typical with Mobil 1, and, more surprisingly, the oil wiped off on the rag very clean, looked just like new. The Mobil 1 would be notably darker by this time. Car has been running smooth and no problems - I am really happy with this oil!

The colour of oil has nothing to do with its lubricating properties, unless the oil is burned.
It may as well be that the Mobil 1 oil had more/better detergents etc. which were washing out all the deposits that bit better.

The Castrol I have in my 450 also looks like new after 3500 miles, with only 500ml in fill-ups over that distance.

Oil cnahe procedure in OM617 is so easy thanks to the oil filter accessable from top and no need to get under the car. Apart from the drain plug

This is a nice write-up on engine oils from a fuel economy perspective, and how the push for lower consumption has changed testing and formulations.
My take away from it: stay away from anything less than 15W-40 ;)

Just stick to the 10W-40 to 15W-50 range, change the oil at recommeded service intervals with a quality brand and use a new filter each time. End of story folks.  :)

I use Red-line 20-50 - never have an issue with it after I pick myself off the floor every time I have just  heard the cost of 12 litres for my 6.9.
