Mechanicals / Re: Trunk Locking itself?
Last post by NalgeneSF - 24 September 2024, 02:28 PM
I'd prefer that the trunk doesn't lock itself unpredictably like this though. It just seems strange that the plunger doesn't push on the rod even though it seems to turn just fine. You think it is coming from the vacuum leaks?

W116 are generally easy to fill radiator.  Just fill it up and then warm up engine and check again.

PS,  if you put your car in your signature it will help us answer your questions better.

I'd fix the vacuum leaks on the interior first and see if that fixes things.  The plunger looks worn but not enough to cause issues.  It's the position of it, not the length that is important for the lock to remain unlocked.

You may need a tool like this to get the front ball joints off.  Sometimes they are easy and sometimes near impossible.  Put the metal can in a vice and slip this tool in.  The wings on the tool are needed to keep wrench from bending!

If the rubber bumpers on front struts are bad TCJ in Germany can put new ones back on.  He also sells new metal cups.

I got my radiator recored and am planning on putting in new g05 coolant back. Replaced the thermostat too. Besides turning the car back on and flushing with distilled water before filling with coolant, how can I "burp" the system or flush it to remove air after I've drained all the water?

I recently bought two of the ball joints for the rear, I got two from here, expensive for sure... but NOS https://www.ebay.com/itm/175714394241

Here is an option for the front: https://www.ebay.com/itm/115175619665

Those aren't boots, they're buffers/bumpers.

Thanks everyone.

My front struts do have boots, they sit inside the metal cups.

With regard to strut removal, how does the ball joint attach to the strut? I can see from the diagram that it seams to sit inside the strut leg, but what keeps it there?

I think I'll take a look at the pads this weekend and try to narrow down which wheel(s) may be specifically causing the sound. Then I'll check for grease and whatnot, and see if that fixes the issue. I'll report back after that.
