Right front fender stripped. The back side was a lot of work to prep! Should be able to spray epoxy primer later this week on bare parts.

I recently found myself looking at the badly deteriorated former-chrome strips on the grille in my W124, and made an experiment with some 3M 3381 aluminium tape I had left over from insulation work on the house. The tape is 1.4 mil (0.04mm) thick, UV and high-temp resistant, and has this slightly dull, polished aluminium look to it.

Since the W116 and W124 grille chrome strips are of similar shape and size, this same technique should be transferable here.

I've carefully peeled remnants of the old chromed tape, gave the plastic a light scuff with 800 grit paper, and then carefuly applied a single 10mm strip of tape to each bar. Trying to get it as even and bubble free as possible is quite the task, as once that tape sticks the only way to fix any mistakes is to start over.

Same process applied to the vertical, metal center bar.
The chrome effect is not as glossy of course, but still looks good.

I actually found out on which cars it was installed , it was for the early Europe Engines that had 8.8 compression ,on those engines they had trouble with headgaskets so Mercedes later reduced the compression to 8.6 and then 8.4 in europe , and wrote in the workshop manual that this valve should be fitted to the engines with 8.8 compression to prevent headgasket failures.

Quote from: Jm4635 on 25 August 2024, 07:27 AMHi all,
Decided it was time to give my motor a birthday and do all new gaskets etc, when I removed the cylinder heads I found red oil, like auto trans fluid to completely fill at least 4 ports between the head gasket and cylinder block, everything looks okay and was curious to see if anyone has encountered this before, I can't find anything on this in the manuals
Cheers

Suggest checking the vacuum modulator on your transmission. You may have ATF being sucked back into the intake.

ATF is typically the only red coloured fluid which might end up in your engine.

I would recommend getting the heads hot tanked and all the valve sealing and guides checked if you already have the heads off. Do not use abrasives!

Quote from: ramiro on 13 April 2024, 11:38 AMThe picture clearly shows an 6.9 Engine.
The screenshot is directly from the 6.9 section in the service manual it is also the only engine where this is mentioned.
I would translate the text but it only says that this switch disconnects the vacum advance above 90 C engine temperature , sadly i was not able to find a part number for this exact switch only 1 with 63 C but without the vent hole.

Maybe because in australia there was no legal way to drive > 110 constantly ?

The Australian spec motor is different to the Euro spec motor.

Essentially, lower compression ratio and a post combustion air injection system, with Pierburg valve on exhaust for recirculation of exhaust gases to lower emissions. Similar to the USA version but with some slight differences.

However, there is still a valve for this purpose. On my car this was broken (plastic fittings snapped) and the air pump had already been deleted. EGR valve likely failed but the intake was completely full of Carbon junk. So, with the intake manifold replacement I have also fully deleted the EGR system and associated valves.
I am not sure if I need to also bypass the vacuum dashpot mounted on the fire wall.

It is a mystery as I will need to do testing once the last stages of re-assembly are completed.

Thank you on it 🙏

Quote from: rumb on 05 September 2024, 02:02 PMIf you are lucky, 4 year old bad fuel is the problem. Any K-jet car that has sat for extended periods generally needs the entire fuel system gone over.  Drain fuel, replace filter in tank, replace filter by pump, replace all rubber hoses that look deteriorated.

Testing fuel pressures is going to be recommended.  Your Fuel distributor and WUR may likely need rebuilt -CIS Flowtech is the best place.

K-jet is the sum of all it's parts: all must be working correctly.

You already know you have spark, so now work on fuel system.

Does your air plate move down with light resistance and spring back? With the ignition on if you press down on it you should hear the injectors.  You can loosen line at injector and see if any fuel comes out.

Meanwhile lots of good reading on this site, dont forget the tech manual here.
