Test Drive / Re: Australian 6.9 sales

Not wishing to get derailed from the purpose of the thread, but thats just economics.  50 year old cars just aren't so common, so if you want one, you will pay for it. In saying this, the covid car market has definitely cooled.

The fellow also had a stack of correspondence 15" thick. Must of been a PITA.

The new owners must like telling that story/ fairytale.

THEY LIED.   THere are MANY 450sel models in the late 70's that have column shift transmissions.

What a shame.  Cars like this in the U.S. are well under $10,000.

The 6.9 never had chrome exhaust tips.  You'll have to heavily modify the current exhaust system in order to achieve your vison.

Update - The cast iron 450 finally came apart and I figured out what caused the locked up engine.
I took the heads off and no apparent damage and it was still locked up.
Took the oil pan and timing cover / chain off.
Found a bent rod on number 4, it appears to have hydro locked.
Had to loosen the main caps to get it to turn and the crank.

I'll answer Lorenzo's question in English.  Unfortunately the WUR is located in a really terrible place on this car (ask me how I know).  It's on the side of the engine under the intake manifold.  If you don't have access to a lift, you can see it if you lie down under the car and look up behind the oil filter.  The WUR is the thing with 2 fuel lines, a vacuum hose and an electrical wire connected to it.

One tip I can give is not to tackle too many things at once, it's a sure way to get overwhelmed and frustrated.
Start with safety critical stuff like brakes and fuel delivery, one system/component at a time.

Thanks, everyone.

Quote from: sutekh on 12 March 2023, 11:51 AMWhat color is your car? Tough to tell exactly from the lighting in the pics. Probably Astral Silber, but looks a bit like Pastel Gray, which is what mine is and why I ask (never seen another one).

It is Astral Silber with a black MB-Tex interior. Unfortunately, my paint is not in great shape.

I've really started to dig into this car in the last week and I have a lot of work to do. Feeling a bit overwhelmed by where to start at the moment. I have a list that seems to keep growing. But searching through the forum and reading posts here has been great.

Thanks again for having me. I look forward to learning and sharing.

Latest Star Magazine just came out with article about W116 50 year anniversary. They also feature a icon gold 1972 450SEL. They state the original buyer ordered before they were even off the assy line. He ordered with column shift and they sent him a floor shift so he made them make an entire new car the way he wanted.  They claim Mercedes stated back to him that his car would be the last column shift w116 they produced and that they would remove that option from the order sheets.
