Mechanicals / Re: Over heating m110 engine

Mine temp gauge does that but it isn't overheating. It fluctuates between just over 80 and the 100 marks. Often driven in temps over 35°C(95°F) and it never goes over the 100 mark. I've double checked it with a thermo temp gun.
My research suggests W116 temp gauges either never go over halfway or they fluctuate between 1/2 and 3/4.

A great many of your questions can be answered by familiarizing yourself with the tech pages on this site.
Here.  If the answer is here people often won't respond.  Cheers,

Please see the following for diagram and lengths : https://handbook.w116.org/cd/Engine/110/13-340.pdf

I'd also recommend just rummaging through the Handbook, it's really a helpfull tool of information : https://handbook.w116.org/

Disappointing but interesting. 🥺

Obviously the pump works and the front valve is working half right. So...

Did the car rise ok at some point in the past?  And did you rebuild the struts or other suspension elements thereafter? I'm guessing "yes".  So, did you see any evidence that fluid was blowing through the strut via the fluid return line?   That is, fluid getting past the internal seals so strut is effectively dead? If it were me I'd be hoping for that, cause then you'd know what to do (replace or re-rebuild strut).  Maybe pull the return line and make sure that little or nothing is coming out, bypassing the strut internals.  At least this is pretty easy to check. Cheers and good luck!

Not so much replace as it would be fixing. Replacing wires isnt fun.

Mechanicals / Over heating m110 engine
Last post by Magyar - Yesterday at 06:10 AM
Hi, all of the M110 powered 280se cars ive owned overheated, why do these engines always over heat?

How do I prevent it from over heating?

Is the temp below too high?

Ditto to the comments by rumb'

I've only overheated 2 times in my cars 45 year ownership.
Both times was down to some part of the system being worn or dated.
And just recently I discovered the system losing water. It was simply simply a faulty radiator cap.
I've taken the radiator out 3 times now, roughly every 10 years and sent it off to be professionally cleaned in an acid bath. Perhaps thats kept it in good stead.

Quote from: rumb on 27 March 2024, 08:28 AMCheck the resistance and voltage  of wires in each socket. I would expect them to be similar.

Also be aware bad grounds lead to problems. The main ground for the rear harness is behind the RR passenger seat.

I will take a look at the grounding cable this afternoon. If the resistance of the wires is different, would it be best to just replace them?
