Interiors & Exteriors / Re: Swapping out the dash
Last post by Randys01 - Today at 05:27 AM
So I've got it back from interstate........nicely packed but some how a few bits have been broken......gee fancy that >:(
So I'm assembling the instrument cluster while I contemplate the way ahead.
In my deep research I've found a mob that can do it in Jan /Feb 25..in blue for double the cost I was quoted 9 months ago?
Thus I have a refurbed black dash in stock OR I can wait even longer and get the blue one refurberd for a Kings ransom.
The battery has gone gazzumper because its not been used for 9 months. :o
Likewise the suspension has finally gone down and the whole show is lookin' like  a hillbilly's turn out.

I'm favouring cutting my losses here...fit the black one up ..get the car going again in the short term and simply enjoy it.
Who's for that?

Congrats to both of you on your stunning new rides (from a fellow W116 280SE owner)!

That Icon Gold / Moss color combo is mind bending!  Man I love the 70's color palette.

I'm unsure, the noise did begin a few months after the brake replacement. (the reverse noise has always been there).

Could this be from a sticking brake (pad/pads)?

I just hit 9 years. Original plan was to be done with resto 4 years ago. I've learned so much from this site as well as made some good friends along the way. Just glad my health is improved a bit and I am able to progress nicely this summer on body work.

Quote from: ramiro on 08 September 2024, 02:20 AMI actually found out on which cars it was installed , it was for the early Europe Engines that had 8.8 compression ,on those engines they had trouble with headgaskets so Mercedes later reduced the compression to 8.6 and then 8.4 in europe , and wrote in the workshop manual that this valve should be fitted to the engines with 8.8 compression to prevent headgasket failures.
This compression story is an interesting point that seems to be lreally off the radar.  My car is a 1976 Euro build (pretty early) and lacks that valve. During the rebuild process after my bent rod episode, I discovered that the engine had previously been rebuilt. The new pistons either 8.6 or 8.4, can't recall now. Doing all that certainly cost somebody a lot of $$$.  Maybe the car blew a gasket and they fixed the root cause (8.8)?  Anyway, it's interesting that everybody cites the euro 8.8 compression, but nobody seems to know that that most euro 6.9s aren't 8.8 at all. Cheers,

Mechanicals / Intermittent squeaking brake s...
Last post by Alex - Yesterday at 05:19 AM
Hi all,

I have recently noticed that my 280se has developed an intermittent squeaking brake sound that goes on and off when driving in excess of 10-20kmh.

Its a very high pitched sound that oscillates repeatedly, and sometimes changes with steering.

I recently (a few months ago) got the brake system redone by a local mechanic, with new rotor and pads.

Is this an issue with the wheel bearings? Or perhaps the brakes need to be reseated or something-or-other?
(Since the brakes were replaced, the brakes do make a loud brake sound when braking backwards- I am unsure if this issue is related.)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

It looks like it went to or came from the diverter valve for the air (smog) pump.  Regardless, this diagram should answer any question you could possibly have for a U.S. version 280se.  Euro versions are different.
