I experienced the same with ACC.  Replaced with UWT electronic controller.  A big mistake.  Rebuild the existing unit.

Did you test them by taking them out of the holes and seeing if they glow? Wondering if I'm having the same issue. Thank you for updating!

UPDATE!

Long story short, I had 2 glow plugs bad even though they tested good using my ohms meter at the relay AND getting a spark at each plug by running a wire from the positive terminal on the battery (to each plug)!

In working on MB diesels for 30 years, this is the 1st time I have seen this!

I replaced all plugs. The light now does not blink (and the car runs perfectly after the light goes out)!

Mechanicals / Re: A/C compressor confusion? ...

As others have said, a low amount of refrigerant in the system will prevent the compressor from coming on. A quick unscientific check is to press the pin on the low side port where you put the refrigerant in. It will have a blue cap after R134 was used. If you get a weak or no release of refrigerant when pressing the pin, you have a low or no refrigerant in the system.

I just added refrigerant today to my 79  SD. It is very normal to have to add refrigerant UNLESS every component has been changed including hoses and  seals!

I'm not super familiar with the Hamilton unit but with the original unit if you hit DEF that should always give you compressor engagement and max heating coming out of the windshield vents.

Might still be worth taking it to a reputable auto AC shop and let them check it out. Sometimes you get lucky and they have an oldtimer on hand that has seen it all 8)

I still highly doubt that the suspension pump could make such a racket. You could take a mechanics stethoscope and put the probe to the pump to see if you hear this clacking noise inside the pump.  Sometimes these very basic tools can be quite helpful.

Thank you, yes that is the most logical thought process and id like to believe I have considered all the small potentials.

This has been an issue for over 6 years.

I've had cars with bad rod bearings and this doesn't really sound like one, but you never know.

To those who have had the pump noise. Did your suspension function as normal?

I had an intermittent loud ticking noise on my M110 engine and found it was the air filter housing hitting the valve cover occasionally, especially when the engine was warm with just a little bit of a rough idle - the point is, I starting thinking it was a rod bearing and ended up with something super simple.

broken rotocaps do make such noise.
A (small) crack in the exhaust manifold can add to this too. Look for gas pulsing on the downside of the exhaust manifold.

I have not thought to check the rotocaps specifically. But I have spent many hours staring at the valvetrain and I did not notice any abnormalities. Exhaust manifold is solid, if that is what you're referring to.

Thank you
