what non-MB old german cars do you like?

Yes,

The only other German marque that gets my attention for possible purchase is the venerable Porsche, specifically the 928 and certain 911s.

I just wouldn't want anything else... The others only gain my visual attention.

For those who like 928's... great car!!! Loads of fun to drive, the GTS is just a rocket but they are extremely complex and maintenance intensive, two of my friends have them and I've driven a 78 first series and a 93 GTS. You also have to deal with a cabin that develops quite a few squeaks and rattles over the years, especially in the early cars, MB's  are just in another league...

Tks,

Joe

As per my username, I started out with Mk1 Golfs (VW Rabbit in the US market). At one stage, my wife and I, and my brother and his wife all had Mk1 Golfs, and we had 13 of them in total, as people offered us old ones for a few quid. Here they are in temporary outdoor storage on a relative's land outside Dublin city. Since then, they have all been sold or given away to good homes.

I love the Mk1's styling, and it was a great design and handling package for its day as well. It saved VW at a time when they had been losing their way in trying to replace the Beetle. In the end, it sold almost 8 million vehicles, and was in production in South Africa until 2009.

The other non-MB german car that I like is the (B4 platform) Audi 80 Avant (would be the Audi 90 Wagon in the US, but I'm not sure if it was ever sold there). I got a '93 one in 2003 and it's the best-built non-MB car of its era. Here's mine with the entire conents of a one-bedroom apartment in it.

I love mark 1 golfs.  I had a mark 1 GTI and drove the heck out of it.  Fun little car.  The biggest reason I bought a mark 5 gti is that previous mark 1 I had.  The mark 5 and 6 gtis really have that same mark 1 feel except that they always seem to be pushing you more to "go faster, go faster!".

I really like that champagne coloured 928 ilike300sd.   I'm jealous.  It's got 80s written all over it and i like the early rear lights and the body strip is a must.  I even prefer the phone dial rims.  When I was searching for them a couple years back I was surprised how many LHD 928s were up for sale in Aus.  It seems many were privately imported for parts or show cars.  I tried my hardest to convince my wife to get one but I fear without knowing too much about them I could've well ended up with a worn out one.  They're not too expensive to buy, some downright cheap but I doubt I would've had the means to get one just right.

I reckon you need to load up more weight to get your rear end lowered more...

I would love to own a 924 Carrera GT, just the over the top bodykit and asymmetrical hoodscoop make this Porsche in something special

soory you feel that way M.T. ;)

I'm a huge Audi fan. The b5 s4 being my favorite. I'm in love with the 2.7t engine and its potential. The 993 c4s is another car I dream of owning. My favorites being Porsche and Audi, of course I have a soft spot for VW :)

Pretty difficult to find a German car that's bad to drive :)  Some of my favourites...

VW Gold Mk1
NSU RO80
Audi Quattro
Audi S8
BMW M1
BMW 3.0 Si
BMW 3.0 CSI
BMW M5 (E28, E34)
BMW 2002 Tii and turbo
BMW M3 (E30)
Porsche 356
Porsche 911
Porsche 928
Porsche 924/944/968

Have an early 1984 E28 M528i and a 1987 3.2 911, both great cars. The BMW is particularly nice to work on, you can get to stuff and for a 5 seater its very small by todays standards.  The straight six M30 engine is one of the worlds greatest engines.  Silky smooth up to the red line and bombproof.  The 911 is wonderful but it's far more labour intensive to maintain because the ancillaries are just thrown on top of the engine.  It's mechanically very strong too.  Parts are cheap for both, the BMW especially so.

Regards, Carl.

Some pics.  The BMW was my first car, I bought it in pieces in 1990 and it took a year to put it together, my parents were horrified.  An old series of polaroids the day I finished it:

I have a thing for classic VWs. I've owned a few: '71 squareback, '71 9-seater transporter, '73 Baja bug, and a '73 westfalia weekender. I gave the weekender to my dad 3 years ago and he still drives it around, its fixed up pretty nice. now I don't have anymore VWs, the 300sd replaced that void.

I also like the old BMWs. i would like an e30 or 2002... but they don't beat MB.

One thing I appreciate about the German auto makers is their fairly well defined market segments:
Mercedes-Benz - luxury touring
BMW - sports touring
Porsche - sports
VW - relatively cheap, solid transport
Audi - the Mercedes and BMW underdog?

While the segments have always been blurred and are getting blurrier, I like various models from all of them but not well enough to list here.

I do see quite a few 1970's BMWs which are very pretty cars but have no experience with any directly.
The 1970's 911 with the whale tail in light green looks good but again have no experience with any directly.
I have fond memories of 1970's VW combi's as my grandfather had a few of them for business.
I don't know much about the Audi's and don't even think I see any from the 70's.
My car appreciation is limited to the 1970's ::)

I'm not a great fan of any marque in particular although I like the Maybach even though even when new and independent from MB the two marque had strong ties.

I do like BMW motorcycles, a R69S is a dream bike. Currently I have a K100RS and K1200LT. Despite being based on the same format they are chalk and cheese, I like at about BMW motorcycles.

Reminds me of that pic of Steve Jobs riding a classic BMW bike.  Also in the same article it shows a silicon valley CEO driving what looks like a silver 79 450 SE or SEL.
