Hi all

Just wondering if anyone on the forum has had any experience with W211 Mercs that have SBC, especially in Australia. The time has come to find a daily driver and I feel a W211 would look nice in the garage parked next to my W116.

I've seen a few nice low mileage cars for reasonable prices; however I am concerned by the SBC system. I'm wondering if it means cars with SBCs should be avoided or is it not that much of an issue?

Would appreciate any advice! thank you

Go post 2005 or whatever it is.  That SBC was a nuisance. The machines as I understand have a set number of brake cycles, then they just start putting out warnings whether they are working or not!  We had to replace it (I recall it being 1-2k at the time?) once on my wife's series 1 e240 which was still a nice car.  we then got her an e500 wagen series 2 which doesnt have this rubbish and is fine.  My sisters e240 series one also has the same issue and had it replaced, and now just ignores it which isn't ideal!
the 211 I think is one of the best looking e classes of all the E's put out, and still looks sharp.

According to wiki:

In May 2004, Mercedes recalled 680,000 vehicles equipped with the system; in March 2005 a total of 1.3 million vehicles were recalled. In 2006 high-volume models such as the E-class returned to conventional hydraulic brake systems. Low-volume luxury models such as the SL, the Maybach and the SLR continued to use SBC due to the prohibitive cost of redesign.[3]

In a letter—only to US customers—dated August 2018 a warranty addendum was sent extending coverage for 25 years and unlimited miles on the following SBC components.

    Hydraulic control unit
    Hydraulic Pump
    Pressure Reservoir
    Brake Operating Unit
Front and Rear wheel speed sensors
    Brake lamp switch
    Yaw Rate Sensor

Out of warranty repairs of these items can be reimbursed by MB if proper documentation is provided. [4]
