I mentioned in a previous post that once I had the rusty parts car 280SE crushed I would be picking up a W126 500SEL AMG.

I am going to do my best to get this running but it was a previous flood car so I don't know how successful I will be.

I think this is a great way to mark my 100th post!

Believe me, those were the best photos of this car.

This should pay for a full resto

Flood car?  How immersed was it?

That car is worth trying to save.  It is very highly specced, and in possibly the most desirable colour combos.  Awesome.

Yes it does have the knob! Now I just need to figure out how bad the motor and suspension are. As far as people being shot, everyone keeps saying that  8)

Now for the big question; What does the engine look like?

TJ, you can check out photobucket.com and search for album mikecarrol1 . Otherwise I will post pics tonight. I pulled off the valve covers last night because the bolts were already missing and snapped some pics I need to upload still.

Way to go Mike  8)  That's an awsome find.  Fingers crossed for the motor to work ;)

Thanks for the compliments. It will be quite the chore. I only showed the good pics  8)

Here are some of the engine with the valve covers off

Damn, look at that pitting.   What sort of water flooded it, rain or sea?  First photo looked promising but seeing that corrosive pitting makes me think a big issue will be what valves were opened during the submersion and where else did the water track and what other damage has been done to cylinders, pistons etc.  Worst case scenario, it shouldn't be too hard to find a suitable M117 engine and ancillaries, although finding an AMG spec M117 will be near impossible unless you customise one.

It's hard to say whether water caused the pitting or not, but I would say otherwise. One of Nathan's old M117s that I pulled apart here had the same pitting on both camshafts with no evidence of water or other engine damage.

That looks like a standard camshaft, so I would go right ahead and replace it with a used one providing there isn't anything else wrong with the engine... how is the cam oiler on that bank?

If water was circulated through the oil then both camshafts would show similar damage, you would expect.

Edit; I see rust next to one of the lobes... hmmm.

I don't think that pitting is the result of the flood damage, I would say that pitting has taken many years to develop to that extent.  You need to look at the back end of the cams (the end facing the firewall), may need a mirror to check it out.  If AMG did any tricks to those cams, there will be markings stamped on the back of the shafts.
