Hmmmm...

Interesting ideas but the biggest hurtle is going to be the electronics. Someone needs to fool the new engine's computers because it will not find airbags, traction control, etc... That is why the guys from Mechatronik do not use current motors in their mods, impossible to do the re-programming. Now an M100 on the other hand should fit just fine and you have no electronics to deal with... if you can get perhaps a 4 speed gearbox form a 560 it should be able to handle the extra torque, modify the transmission valve body to start in first gear and you have a rocket in your hands.

Tks,

Joe

The most doable would be the 24 valve version of the same motor from the W124  :)

I agree,

It would drop right in and need close to no modifications.

Tks

That sounds great - 3.0 or 3.2 ?

As nice as it looks, I think Nathan's keen on parting it out (so am I actually).

There's lots of things needed for my 560, and I think it is the same colour as well.

so i got the parts car back from the mechanic today, after the blown head gasket repair. work needed included new camshaft, rocker arms, distributor cap and so on. the good news is i got to drive the 'parts' 126 for the first time today. beautiful to drive, some minor surging at rest which I'm told is some residual moisture in the engine which should burn itself out. anyhow, I'm going to try and get it registered on friday but need to figure out why the aircon blower isn't working (need defroster to pass test!). attached is a video of the first drive

Out of curiosity how much did the repair cost?

$100 for the car?  Wow, you really got a deal - around here a full-sized Benz gets $400 at the wrecker's for scrap weight.

cheers John, ill let you know if its a bargain if i get it over the pits successfully to register it. i still can't get my blower to work to function the the front demister.  the 126 blower/aircon setup is an absolute monster, it is genuinely gigantic, i forgot how big until i remembered the last time I've wrecked a 126.  I've checked
-the fuse inside the box
-the metal strip fuse adjacent the box
-pulled the passenger footwell to access the  blower which i can now see. i can see the resister/porcupine like thing and the blower with wires. at this time i have no voltmeter at my place.  i will directly wire up the  blower tomorrow to see what happens.
-if i push the demister button it does get hot from the top dash vents, but trickles out. compared to absolute silence if the blower/aircon buttons are pushed. i have no fan speed on any buttons
im not a mechanic but need to fix this asap to get successfully registered.
any tips appreciated

Check the resistor box in the engine bay just near the coolant reservoir... it could be that the other ceramic resistor has gone open-circuit; not just the fan speed control resistor box.

Also,

IMO, I would just leave the fan non-functional. It is very unlikely that the car will pass first go, and is there are no minor issues to pick on, they will likely pick on bigger more expensive problems and send you on your way to "fix the issues".

The engine and trans has to be clean, dry, and free of oil leaks.

Hi guys,
luckily the car got over the pits and is now registered again.  we got the blower motor working, some idiot had played with all the wiring and when it did start working, was wired in reverse!!  passed over the pits, then treated the car to a new Alpine head unit with handsfree phone. installed a new aerial (the original National - from Japan, had a snapped mast). got the windows tinted (i like it a bit darker than regular), new clear indicators and it looks pretty good. new number plates are on the way. i had it the AC regassed the other day and AC wouldn't work, worse still the blower stopped working too. for that great work they charged me 300 dollars. so up to the mechanics, a new heater tap (which is very easy to change on a 126) and the AC started working, awesome!! only problem is on the way home the AC stopped blowing cold, then the fan stopped. interestingly the fan then works a little while later after the car rests but the AC is still not cold and the blower will stop after 10 mins. not sure what the hell is going on but will fix it eventually.  i also noticed some pulsing of the brakes which the mechanic feels are the fronts, so new rotors are on their way (ATE).  but, I'm very happy with the 126. after a clay barring and waxing, the paint looks almost black in some light (dunkel blau 904) and maybe one day ill even go for a 560.

Looks nice Nathan.  Glad you saved it.  I've been tempted by the W126 300SE at times but my current 280SE is close enough.

Since you have experience with a number of W116 and W126 models, perhaps you could one day share your thoughts regarding the high and low points of each?
