W124 auto transmission

Does anyone know if all w124 has the same automatic transmission? I have a 94 250 td and my neighbour has a '88 230 E, and I am hoping to get his transmission. I found a chart that said that all merc auto trans from 1981-1997 have the same model number w4a040, but can this be right? That they have used the same yransmission for 16 years?

I'm not sure, but usually the diesels have the starter motor on the opposite side compared to the gasoline engines. You could check that first.
