W123 - VIN number location

Hi,

i'm working on a 300D here, and i can't find the VIN number anywhere. I have the metal plate rivetted to the cross member above the radiator, but the VIN must be stamped into the sheet metal somewhere.

It's not on the crossmember above the radiator like W107's, or on the firewall like W116's or on the driver's side door pillar?

i hadnt even thought about that!
my wifes 230e (85) is an SA car, and has the VIN plate attached to the same place as our 116s...admittedly i couldnt find it stamped into the chassis anywhere either? i will try and chekck the other SA 123 when it stops raining here!

Thank you for your help Nathan.  At least I'm not alone in not finding a stamped VIN on the cross member.  But where is it then?  There must be one somewhere.

couldnt find it on the aussie 280e either?! there was no VIN plate on the 280 whereas it was on the white 230...the australian compliance plate on the 280 was next tothe brake booster.

I can't get at my coupe to check, but have you looked in the owners manual ? They are normally pretty good at describing where the VIN and other plates are located. It would be unusual for the body not to be stamped somewhere.

Craig, I do not have the owner's manual.  The car is not mine - I'm doing bodywork on it for someone else.  The front cross member above the radiator has been damaged in an accident, and previously fixed.  I was wondering if the VIN had gone missing in all this, but it now appears that the VIN is not stamped on the cross member in W123's.  I have also checked the frame rails (where the number is on W111's and W109's).

Perhaps on the floor under the driver's seat?  (W202's and W140's have it there)
