Gross weight is the allowable all up weight fully laden with 5 people, luggage, roof rack and a few slabs of beer ;D (Or Crates of Grange  if you're that posh)

I think a crate of Grange would outweigh the price of a 123 these days !

Ian, are you looking for a different diff center for your 6.9??

13B

No, the 6.9 being the tower of reliability that it is - its best to leave it alone...

Looking for a Team116 car I came across this:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Mercedes-300D-Fitted-with-VS-Holden-Commodore-V6_W0QQitemZ280165964178QQihZ018QQcategoryZ135585QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I didn't buy it because a) not enough cylinders, b) auto c) not a 116, and d) if its pushing around 1900-odd kg its probably no faster than a V6 commodore... if it was a V8 then I probably would have given it a gurnsey and done the melbourne-devonport-melbourne-with-Des-help thing once again.

The low sale price says to me wait for a converted-to-local-V8 116 to come along as they are obviously quite worthless (sorry to have to say that Mercules, what with all the hard work you've done on your car, and wasn't meant to sound like a dig at your efforts), shouldn't have to shell out even 1/2 what it would cost to convert a 116 to local V8.

ah yes, same colour as my W123

that car has been listed here in the local newspaper for the last few weeks, started at $3500, then to 3000
obviously no one wants to touch it,
which I don't blame people,
why would you take one of the most reliable and long lasting motors, rip it out, install some Buick/American created piece of junk that is completely stuffed after 200,000k's and install it in, for the 1970's the world's most reliable and one of the most affordable cars to run?

13B

Yes I can't understand it either... what happened to the 5cyl diesel - I've heard they can run to a million km or more...

I can appreciate someone wanting more get up and go than a W123 with a 230 petrol or 240D engine could provide putting in the V6... but would it really be that much quicker than say a 280E M110 engine?

I respect your distaste for the holden engine but remember the ultimate environment my club car will be in - the lifespan is of less a consequence than the availability of performance parts for the engine.    Also remember I come from a background of some of the shortest-lifespan engines (rotarys) so even if a local V8 in a 116 club car lasted 2 years in between rebuilds I would consider that acceptable.

I.

my opinions are more geared towards the intention of a car or engine, I have zero respect for cars and car brands that just build shitty rubbish cars, for the sake of selling shitty rubbish cars, white goods, like a fridge/freezer, built to last 7 - 10 years then it is all broken and needs to be scraped.

I have more respect for say a Datsun 240Z, than a clubsport bogan Commodore, the 240Z is built with passion, the design is a work of art, engines and gearboxes reflect this, reliable, strong, track cars.

I have more respect for a mini clubman than a XR8 falcon,
