Why on earth do people risk their lives driving such shamefully designed and built POS! That car, as must all cars sold new in Oz, would have passed the allegedly stringent tests for safety and integrity, so what's wrong - is it the manufacturer/s or the system? Who pays what to whom?

Modern cars supposedly incorporate many of the features invented/launched by M-B (the safety cell, for instance) - but they prove, time and again, that they are incapable of doing it right!  Their dedication to building safe cars is nothing more than lip-service.

Though having survived a hit from a landcruiser last year I have respect for old Porsches as well.

If only more 116's had ABS I would believe the passive safety thing a bit more - that's the one area where a modern M-B runs absolute rings around a 116.
