So I'm playing with a W126.....

Engine mounts - new in the middle, old ones on either side....

Front wheel bearing.  The reason it looks like this is an interesting story.  I'll get more photos to depict the reason.

That left engine mount has certainly reached the end of its life... That will be a huge improvement.

That wheel bearing outer race is odd... I've no idea how that would end up damaged like that.

It had apparently been installed with a sledgehammer, resulting in the bore into which it fits becoming distorted out-of-round.  The cone above was therefore distorted, and had a high point, which overheated leading to surface break-up.

The story's you've been telling us about the things that go on over there are quite concerning indeed.

are you sure the mechanics over there aren't just shaved apes dressed up to look like humans ? ;)

Haha MT.  In general, the cars that come to me for intensive care are those that have 'been-got-at' by so-called professionals.

Are your Aus pro-mecchy's better than shaved apes?

Some of them arent even shaved ;)

OK so here's the horror pics.

Look at the beating this hub has taken :

Inside, you see the damaged area, corresponding with the location of the failure of the surface of the bearing race/cone :

Look at the chisel marks where the previous mechanic had bashed out the old bearings.  It has damaged the seats of the bearings, preventing them from seating squarely.

I got some good breaker's yard replacements (not easy since most hubs have suffered similar damage somewhere in the last 20 years...)  I had them blasted - the bolt hole threads were protected with sacrificial bolts.

Painted up with zinc-laden cold-galvanising paint (high temp and brake fluid resistant) :

Tomorrow I can fit the discs and bearings.  Yay.

Nice results. 8)

Those hubs were pretty bad, I must say.

BTW, they'll run on a 116... I have a pair of those toothed ABS version hubs on the 6.9.

Yeah, the hubs are the same, apart from the ABS teeth.  The ABS units require a slightly smaller diameter oil seal than the non-ABS versions, but AFAIK the bearings themselves are the same.
