On this week's instalment of Mercedes-Benz TV (IPTV - online http://www.mercedes-benz.tv/) there is a huge feature on the "enviro-friendly" upcoming and in-development models. (There's also some nicely choreographed dancing between segments.)

There is a lot of time given to presenting and explaining the latest concept: the F700 luxury car (in size between the regular and long S-Class) with the DiesOtto drivetrain.

I spent more than an hour getting my weekly dose of M-B TV this morning, and still didn't get through the whole program. Shall have to go back tomorrow for the rest.

And notice that the photographer drives a 450SE because he likes large fast cars - and it's referred to as maturing from a used car into a classic. Good news all round.

Bloody eco-cars. They're the greatest con on earth. The amount of shite chucked into the air by building cars, transporting them round the world, then melting them down at the end of their life makes the shite my Merc (16mpg... ahem...) pumps out look pretty negligible.

The best thing we could do for the environment car wise, is stop making them. Use the ones we've got. Not design huge new ones powered by massive blocks of lead and sulphuric acid... THe ship that brings a batch of Volvos on the short trip from Sweden to Britain burns more fuel in that 400mile voyage than all the cars on board it will ever burn in their lives.

I concur!   When folk ask me why I collect old cars and keep them running, I answer that I'm a conservationist.  Gives 'em sumpin' ta fink about.
