Proof of ownership

Gotta question especially for New South Wales folk.

How do I transfer ownership of an unregistered vehicle?

No, not a 6.9.  I'm talking of this red 280S that's wallowing in the backyard.  I bought it off ebay last November approx, from ACT.  The PO cashed in the remaining rego prior to selling.  I got the cancellation receipt for the ACT rego.  I took all the paperwork I had to the RTA and asked what do I need, thinking a stat dec by the PO would finalise it.  They said I need a bill of sale. I said, "what's a bill of sale, - a receipt?"  No! a bill of sale.

What's a bill of sale in relation to private sales?  Is this a document from the post office, tax office, a JP?
How can I get this 280 in my name before I do the blue slip, pink slip, green slip thing?

A BILL OF SALE is simply a piece of paper on which it is stated that the owner has sold you the vehicle and for how much.
It should have both your names and addresses, the price and VIN.

In reality it is a receipt.  ;D

So, no fancy receipt book, it can be simply written on a blank piece of A4 paper.  Or, I can type up a letter saying:

"I PO of this address sold 280S (vin) to oscar of that address on this date for this much"
then get both signiatures

Is it that simple?

If your wondering why the procrastination, I planned on stripping it originally, then I was going to fix it, then i was going to strip it, then i was......... you know how the story goes. ;D

problem will be they wont change it over till after its registered...... you can only change ownership of a car if its currently registered.

Well this was my first thought too.  It'd be so much easier to transfer rego of a registered car within the same state for starters.  Being unreg before I took posession with no receipt or bill of sale, I'm just a bit worried about proving ownership when I take the first steps in getting a blue slip.

PatB, that process in SA sounds way too simple.
I think I'll just go and write up a receipt, get sig's, then go from there.

Oscar, in my 6.9 searches I've become quite learned in registration issues.  It seems it does vary from territory to territory.  The states I've looked at all had really really helpful websites that answered every question I could think of.  Before you start speculating, find out from the website in your state (sorry I don't have the address).  I do agree though that getting a bill of sale (or a purchase agreement) is a good way to start.

Let me tell you, you've got it easy compared to South Africa........

I read Pat's post and thought I wondered if scalss read that, knowing how hard it was to transfer from father to son let alone importing something.

I think another visit to the website too might be a go.  It's been a fair while. :)
