Not to hijack the thread or be confrontational to the poster, but why do so many 6.9s tend to get parked somewhere for years at a time? Such a fun car to own and fairly expensive to purchase, so why just let it sit?

Fuel consumption? - my 350SE does 15-21 MPG (imperial gallons), but a friend who has a 6.9 talks about 8-10 MPG (interesting to note that his car has only 14k miles on it  ;))

I suppose that must be it. I estimate I'm getting 6-8mpg on the streets of Miami but doing fairly well at 10-12 mpg on the highway (then again I've only had the car for two or three full tanks of gas).

They also give much more trouble if parked for too long.

Mine is used one day per week every time there is a sunny day.

Fuel consumption of mine is 15 imperial mpg around town and 18 mpg highway - not significantly greater than my 450SEL.

rumor has it Dr Bill, is that your 450SEL has been parked for a very long time  8)

We found ourselves talking about that very topic on the weekend. Its time to finish it off  ;)

Yeah the 450 needs some time all right - subtle hint taken.
Still a 450 parks better than a 6.9 which is what initiated this post.

Now that the 6.9 is approaching as "good as I can get it" I will see what turns up.

The problem is I can see me not stopping until it's as good inside and out as the 6.9.

Yes, the question of where to stop is always a problem.

I would say that the main reason there are a few 6.9s sitting around is that their owners have some idea of what they have, but are not willing to put in the work and money to sort them out. What happens is, they end up getting to the point where they just rot and they miss out on selling an OK example due to their stubborn nature and/or delusional state of mind. The car simply ends up in the wreckers when they kick the bucket so to speak. 8)

This seems to be a recurring theme with old Mercs in general, not just 6.9s.

Just my observations.

A have always bought cars with the intention of making them reliable to drive, and to drive them wherever possible. My 6.9 is no exception to the rule. Cars are meant to be driven. 8)

Sounds like your referring to the dumbasses in that welfare suburb with the "Eimer von Scheisse" 6.9 rotting in their front yard - and having the nerve to expect 20k for it ;)

That's the one,

The one that I came to own was in a similar situation though, it's just that they were reasonable with their asking price. Plus they had to clear out ASAP to Adelaide.

Plenty of "gunna" cars is backyards everywhere, "I'm gunna restore it one day".

The owners have some idea of the value of the cars and assume they'll appreciate but as they turn into rust their value falls until they are near worthless, that red 6.9 in Melbourne a couple of us looked being an example.

I'd say 'gunna restore it one day' is a recurring theme with most cars and kept outside in the sun and rain without attention they go backwards quickly.
I love the line from The Castle (in response to the advertised price), 'Tell 'em they're dreamin'

I thought the best quote for old rusty cars left lying around was...

they say "I will do something with that one day..."

just reply "What sweep it up"

Took my stripped out 450 for a "paddock run today".

I have put in a fresh set of BP5ES plugs and it  idled beautifully when warmed up.

Starting to think about finishing the sanding - you never know...
