I suppose I might owe (the quality of) my life to him.

I was involved in a serious accident in a Volvo 240 where a truck hit me from behind after coming off a highway into an urban area - he was distracted and never touched the brakes.

The crumple zone design of the Volvo (which I believe was based on some of Bela's earlier work) saved my back, neck and ass.  Not to mention that it was driveable, despite having bent just above the rear wheelwells like an accordian.

Volvos were particularly renowned for their safety.
I remember my dads 1972 Volvo 142 having a side impact protection bar in all of its two doors. Our S-class monsters don't have one.

Probably thanks to him that I'm here today.

My previous car was a Toyota Corolla - year 2000. The engine was shot. Only 10 years old, damn the luck. Of course, we did get from a dealership, used, in 2002.

When that blew, the only car I could afford was a 1979 300SD. And one year later, here I am.

I love hearing my door shut. I drive a tank.
