Engine hoist, balancer, and relatively recently rebuilt 617A (rebuilt in 1998 at a cost of $8000, but then the car was wrecked from behind a few thousand miles later and the engine's been stored since).

Cool Casey! those old deisels look so easy to work on! You got near future plans for the motor no doubt?

$8k is a rather substantial sum.  They must have replaced everything.  Then again, my brain is adjusted to SBC prices.

The paperwork is a bit vague but says:

"AS DISCUSSED AND AGREED UPON WE HAVE REMOVED AND REBUILD THE ENGINE / WE REPLACED ALL THE PISTONS ASSY AND THE CYLINDER LINERS AS WELL WE HAVE REPLACED ALL THE CRANK SHAFT MAIN BEARINGS AND THE CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS / WE ALSO REBUILD THE CYLINDER HEAD AND INSTALLED NEW EXHAUST AND INTAKE VALVES AND GUIDES / AND REPLACED ALL OTHER PARTS WHICH WERE NECESSARY FOR REBUILDING THAT ENGINE COMPLETE / WE ALSO REPLACED THE CAMSHAFT AND ALL ROCKER ARMS (CAMSHAFT / WE HAD A USED ONE SEE NOTE AT PARTS LISTING) THE LABOR BELOW INCLUDES THE R & R OF THE ENGINE AND CHECK UP AND ADJUSTMENT / 1000 MILE SERVICE"

Total parts was $4549.28, total labor was $3034.00.  The service was actually done down in your neck of the woods, at German Classics, Inc. in Chamblee, GA.  Maybe I'll scan the parts list and post it later.  The mileage on the engine when the service was performed was 170,240.  The engine is out of a W126 which means it could be a direct drop in to a W123 or adapted to a W116 with a little work (I believe the oil pans are different).  The nice thing is that means it's the .952 which is 125hp, so a bit more powerful than the W116 .950 variant (110hp in 1978-1979 and 120hp in 1980) and the best 617 made.  I hope to use it in a W116 300SDL project.

What is SBC?
